The iPod comes with the stock white earphones, good sounding but might not be enough for audio fanatics like some of us on the list. The best option are isolating earphones which give superb detail to sound, but a bit heavy on the pocket.

A lot got the Shure E2c last year, a new model is available now abroad but not yet locally- the Shure E3c. There are a lot of good reviews about it! Try Google.

But for me just ordered the ER-4 by Etymotic Research . Good reviews about the unit, and perfect for a sound engineer like me, not for everyone though.

    interesting looking headset... :music:

i used a friend's sony headset with active sound suppression the other day. Big difference over the non sound dampenning units...

I'm thinking of getting the Shure E3c

The Shure E3c definitely has the best value according to most of the reviews I've seen, and the best looking and perfect match pangporma with the iPod.

I've been calling Audiophile since it was launched to check on local availability, baka a month or two pa daw.

I myself have a pair of Grado SR-60s and Sony MDR-888s. The former when I'm at home and the latter when I'm on the go.

I've thought about purchasing the Shure E2c/E3cs but they're kinda... dangerous. Really. You can't hear anything but your music! :music:

Ditoy, did those buds cost more than your iPod? :haha:

hehehe! Not more expensive than my iPod 40Gb naman but same cost as the iPod Mini plus shipping charges! ($279.95)

Easily justified because I can use it for my recording projects. I also do freelance engineering work- when I go to different recording studios, it's always a problem that I am faced with different monitor speakers, different sound everytime. With the Etymotic in hand, I can just plug it into any mixer or preamp then I am assured I can monitor the mix thru my trusted ER-4. ;)

Isn't it great when you have a job where you can justify expensive purchases, both for work and play? :)

One day.. when I grow up.. I'm gonna get some job that does just that. :)

oh yeah, definitely. Speaking of headphones, AsiaMiles gave me some Bose Noise-cancelling QuietComfort headphones last week. Generally, it's been given positive reviews.. but aside from the noise cancelling feature, I still find my Grados sound better :)

Zauber- with the Grado SR60- you don't get what you pay for! You get more! Really. ;)

Mine is the Sennheiser 590 circum-aural headphones. Great sound for the money. Though the Ety's are tempting for real portable use. :haha:

    Wicked!

That's a wicked looking set [IMG]! I still use the stock earphones, though they're starting to get bad vibration... and it's not even a year old [IMG]! Does anyone know if my warranty covers this?

I use the Sony MDR NC-10 Noise Cancelling Earphones.

This was one of the first to appear on the market, and cost a bundle. It has essentially the same features as the newer models, which is to say good. It boosts the levels by about a fifth, and is a bit on the bassy side.

The nice feature this excellent, in-ear model has that wasn't retained in later iterations is the convenient kill switch in the battery pack/control bulb on the main line. It allows you to hear outside noise in case someone decides to talk to you, or enable you to hear where the 18-wheeler barrelling toward you is coming from. It's great on planes (and conveniently includes a plane seat adaptor) and other low noise-y environments.

It's an old model, but it holds up fine against most earbuds in its class.

I have a pair of Koss earphones (am sure ditoy_eagle will be familiar with the brand) that are just great. Pardon me, but am I required to list down my equipment at the bottom of my posts?

    hi bomalabs!

Nope you're not required to put in anything :D The bottom of your posts is normally reserved for your signature and some people just find it more convenient to put in the different digital devices that they have just in case another member who has the same setup / device is having problems with theirs.

Going back to the Topic. I love my stock headphones - ok its another way of saying I can't afford those in-ear ones :D. Since I normally plug it in my car's radio using a tape adapter, I'm not that particular with the quality of the earphones...

Just got a Philips HE592 Surround Sound Earbuds.

It's way better than the Apple In-Ear Headphones. Richer bass, surround sound effect, doesn't slip -- a real upgrade from the stock earphones. Here's the kicker: it's only $19.99 @ Target.

Question to audio pros. On headphone specifications, what numbers should one look for in terms of frequency range, sensitivity, impedance, and power input?

I just got the Sony MDR-EX71 earbuds. I had them bought in Singapore so they're white! :) The ones sold in the States come only in black. Check out the MDR-EX70 review on ipodlounge.com.

    Hi freeformula,

Your earphone choice sounds really nice. May I aske where you bought them and for how much?

I never tried others. The default ones are OK to my ears. I did buy some rubbery replacements for the foam at Radio shack. Blue lang nga.

    Thanks,

    Junjun

Hey softwarewolf, I don't think it's available locally. I've seen it on the apple store ($49.95), but only in black. I found out that the white models are sold only in Asia. Had my sister based in Singapore buy it for me. It cost S$80.00 which is roughly P2720.

Well, I don't have an ipod but I figured I'd give my :2cents: anyway. I really don't like earphones, because they suffer in producing a wide range of frequencis as opposed to headphones. However, with the latter, you suffer in protability. Here are my picks

    High quality
    - Sony MDRV700DJ
    - Technics RPDJ1200

    Value for money
    - Technics RPF550
    - AKG K55
