This is obvious but sometimes forgotten - set YM's proxy server. The proxy setting for our system is not automagically used by YM.

Same thing here (MSN included). Even if I enter the correct server and port number, it wont connect.

I can't use Yahoo Messenger in my school with a proxy server also. But in my mom's office which also has a proxy server, I am able to use it. MSN messenger works totally fine in both places though.

Here's my setup for YM for PC's (version 5,6,0, 1339):

    Check USE PROXIES
    Check ENABLE HTTP PROXY
Key in HTTP PROXY SERVER NAME and PORT

The last one is the same proxy used by your browser if you're network admin has configured your HTTP traffic to go through a proxy server.

    Good luck!

The Mac version of Yahoo Messenger only supports connecting through HTTP Proxies, whereas the PC version additionally supports SOCKS4/SOCKS5. Although HTTP proxies are much more common, not all of them are configured to allow connections to Yahoo Messenger.

I've noticed that I've been unable to connect using either Adium or Yahoo Messenger. When using Adium, I can't connect no matter the proxy setting -- HTTP/SOCKS. With Yahoo Messenger, everytime I connect I'm automatically logged off, claiming that I'm already logged in elsewhere (and I'm sure I'm not).

    Haven't tried Proteus yet, though.

    Hi Gino!

When YM claims that you are already logged in elsewhere, try checking the "Sign In under Invisible Mode" before signing in.

Just for the record, I have always been able to successfully log in with my DLSU dial-up connection (which is also under a proxy server); albeit messages are so delayed:roll:

Thanks for that tip. I'll be sure to try it out. What's odd is I think it's the Mac client of YM that's futzy. The Linux and Windows clients work fine on the same proxy server. But then again, that doesn't explain why Adium fails also.
