When I opened my Adium this morning, I got a number of messages from some of my contacts asking if I really sent them a link through IM. The thing is, I didn't and I wasn't even online for almost an entire day. Could it be a worm affecting my system? Is it on the IM server or is it on my mac? Had anyone else experienced the same problem? Will probably do a clean install of Adium and see if it helps.
Re: New worm affecting Adium? i received a couple of links from some contacts a few days back. what particular IM are you using? perhaps a little MAJIKA could solve the problem
Re: New worm affecting Adium? I too been receiving such links thru YM from my friends as well. I know for a fact that they did not sent it intentionally. I clicked on the link and doubted right away since it asked for username & password of some sort.
Re: New worm affecting Adium? I can't isolate the problem quite yet since I use AOL, GTalk, Yahoo and MSN on Adium. I suspect it's Yahoo though since I haven't received any complaints from my MSN, AOL and Gmail contacts. But that could also be because I only have a few friends from that MSN, AOL and Gmail. Ha. The link points to a geocities site that requires a username and password. Oh and majika doesn't work. Tried it na.
Re: New worm affecting Adium? It is a geocities site but login as if it is a yahoo site (reminds me of that of Citibank site). And if you dare to further test your curiosity, enter your username & password (Yahoo), before you know it, they have your YM login id & password. I hope I'm wrong.
Re: New worm affecting Adium? It's possible it's a problem with Yahoo Messenger. At the moment, I can't log on. I tried different clients, even from my Treo using Verichat. Did they just get hacked?
Re: New worm affecting Adium? Gabe, let me know if you've isolated the problem to YM so I can edit the thread title. Thanks.
Re: New worm affecting Adium? It seems to be a Yahoo problem. My MSN and AOL contacts didn't receive any links from me. Am pretty sure my Gtalk contacts didn't either. As a precaution against phishing, I changed the password on my Yahoo account and installed a security key feature that Yahoo has available as well, just to be sure.
it happened to me also. but i don't give much attention to it. i ahve been receiving lots of links. hmm i wonder when will yahoo do something about this.
this has been going on for months already. a friend sends you a link (which, they don't probably know they did), you click on that link and enter your login info, and your account gets hijacked and you won't be able to use your account anymore since they have already changed your password. best thing to do is to create a new account and inform your friends not to click on the link that you have supposedly sent them.
Same problem as Elbert. Can't log on to YM using both the YM client and Adium. Adium loads all my other accounts though, MSN, AOL, GTalk.
Yahoo was a victim of a DOS attack. Crippling messenger and even email services http://news.com.com/2100-1023-236621.html Been having trouble logging in since this morning. Now im using www.meebo.com. Hmm...I wonder why meebo works and the YM client doesnt.
I've also experienced both the problems specified in this thread: The first one(a few months ago) wherein your friend supposedly sends you a link(using his/her YM) to open and it takes you to geocities or some yahoo-related website. The site you're taken to looks perfectly legit and asks for your YM username and password to view the site. Be careful of that one, its a phising tactic. After they get your info, they will make it appear as if you are now the one sending the link. And the vicious cycle continues if your friends let the attacker phis for their info too. The link(itself) sent to me purportedly contains pictures sent by the sender. Yes I was fooled. Learned it the hard way. Good thing they didn't change my password. What I did, after having discovered the attack, was to immediately change my password. So far so good. I was also experiencing problems yesterday connecting to YM thru several clients i.e. proteus, YM, trillan, and meebo. I first thought it was just an office network/home dsl connection problem. Until after reading this thread.
