I let my friend use my mac for a paper that she needed to write and when I got back to it I noticed that the view button on the toolbar was missing. I tried gaining access to it by searching for it but word doesnt give my any results. I tried reinstalling office 08 but I think I wasnt able to delete my preferences and it kept it the same way. I only moved the office 08 folder from the apps folder to the trash folder... Does anyone know what to do? If not, how do I completely remove the microsoft office files (including the preferences)? I didnt realize how important that view toolbar button is til it was gone.... sad
The preference files (with a .PLIST extension) are normally not deleted when you trash or reinstall an application. This is good because it's easy to preserve your settings when you decide to reinstall an application but not so good when you want to return all the settings back to default. Fortunately, it's easy to delete those plist files. Just go into your Library folder (the one in your Home folder, not the one in the root folder) and look for the plist file for the application you want to reset, then trash it. In your case, you want to trash "com.microsoft.Word.plist". Next time Word starts, it should be back to the default settings. If you want to automatically delete those plist and other support files whenever you uninstall an application, you can use something like AppZapper.
Hi Gels, try creating a new mac admin account and open word there. if the view button in the open toolbar is no longer missing then a file in your old account was corrupted. If that's the case, do the following to solve your problem. While logged on in your new admin account do the following: 1 Open ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/User Templates/ 2 Copy Normal.dot to shared folder 3 Open ~Library/Preferences 4 Copy com.microsoft.Word.plist to shared folder 5 Copy com.microsoft.office.plist to shared folder 6 Log out of new admin account 7 Log into old problem account 8 Replace files in respective places 9 Pls make sure that you have removed Word 2004 Normal.dot file and also Microsoft 2004 Identities in your Documents>Microsoft User Data folder, if any, (since they maybe corrupted as well) 10 Open Word. HTH
i have the solution (i think) so, you're saying that the "view" thing that's supposed to be beside "edit" is missing? if that's the situation then... 1. right click on the standard toolbar (with the New, Open, Undo, etc.) in Word 2008... 2. select Customize Toolbars and Menus... 3. under the Toolbars and Menus tab, you'll see a list of...toolbars.. 4. select Menu Bar and click the reset button...
Got it back now. What I did was delete the .plist file and the standard toolbar reappeared (apparently someone also removed that one from my word). Then did the customize toolbars and menus way. Thanks guys! Now I will think twice in letting other people use my mac. ergh.
