WM files now play in Quicktime player via a component you can download here. Rid your machine of one more pesky Microsoft app...

Good news indeed! The only thing missing is a decent XviD plugin for Quicktime.

Cool! Just a couple of months ago the basic player was a $10 shareware option. I'd have to say thanks to MS for making this available as a free download.

Wow great. Does this mean I can "safely" remove MS Media Player from my system? Media player used to give me error messages when I view more than one web page that has video. Lets see....

I hope it hijacks embedded wmv files in webpages so that quicktime will handle the video instead of windows media player. Does this mean that the browser's mime-type settings should me modified as well?

yup that's exactly what it does. it plays the .wmv just as if it were a .mov. sweet! and its a whole lot quicker - none of that buffering waste of time in an external window, it just plays right in the browser.

i may have found a bug with this plug-in... i hope someone else can confirm, everytime you play a divx encoded avi file, like the ones from google video, the sound stutters in quicktime player.

There's an incompatibility with Quicktime 7.0.4 - it crashes when QT or the webpage where QT is embedded is closed. The developers are aware of it and should release an update soon.

Now's as good a time as any to find out if that free MacUpdate account is worth it.

Just added Flip4Mac 2.0 to my Macupdate 'Watch List'.

It should inform me if there are updates.

    Try it yourself.

if you want to keep track of just the free plug-in you might want to specify just the WMV player under Flip4Mac which incidentally has a 2.0.1 version out already to address some issues with QT 7.0.4. go get it.

EDIT: tested it on sites where i experienced the crashing and it is fixed. no more closing QT either when opening multiple windows and playing them at the same time. this ones a keeper.

Just installed the update. Very nice. Thanks for the headsup! The nice thing about it is that it's faster and more polished than the original WM player 9. Streaming videos are smooth unlike the old plugin's very choppy, buffer-starved playback. :D
