A thought experiment for when Apple joins the 9th generation of video game consoles.

For convenience let's call it the "Apple TV Pro"

If Apple were to compete with a PS5 or Xbox Series X then it would need to have
    • 10.3 or 12 teraflops discreet GPU
    • 16GB memory
    • 825GB or 1TB storage
    • Drive a 4K or 8K HDMI display
    • Have a controller
    • 315 or 350W PSU
    • Costs $500
The Mac mini that is more powerful than the Apple TV has
    • 2.6 teraflops integrated GPU
    • 8GB memory
    • 256GB storage
    • Drive a 4K or 6K HDMI display
    • No controller
    • 150W PSU
    • Costs $699
Who knows... the 310W iMac 27" Apple Silicon chip may power it though I'd want to see how Apple will set up the business plan for a video console.

If the PS5 or Xbox Series X were general purpose computers like a PC or Mac it would be very cheap at $500.

Before anything else. They need games exclusive to their platform which means convincing game developers to buy in their ecosystem. Hardware is just one component of gaming. Nintendo makes crappy hardware but they are still able to thrive because of exclusive games like Mario and Zelda.
