Any muggers with this one? I'm planning to get this as an alternative to Apple TV or Popcorn Hour. Its just cheap at $99. I believe it suits my requirements because I just want it to play my downloaded torrent avi files stored in my passport to my regular TV. Plus its small and portable.

    From the WD website:

Combined with a My Passport portable drive (sold separately), this player is the most convenient way to play HD movies or user-generated videos, listen to high-quality digital music and show high-resolution slideshows of your family photos on your TV. Also works with popular USB drives, and digital cameras, camcorders, and portable media players that can be recognized as mass storage devices.

Optimized for My Passport and My Book storage, works with many other
USB storage devices - Play content from most popular USB drives, and digital cameras, camcorders, and portable media players that can be recognized as mass storage devices.
Full HD video playback and navigation - up to 1080p - Experience the spectacular picture quality of HD video and crystal clear sound clarity of digital audio. Use the included remote control to navigate through your entertainment choices using our crisp, animated HD menus.
Collect without limits - There's no limit to the size of your media collection; just add more USB drives for more space.
    Advanced navigation
Thumbnail and list views – Browse your content by filename or by thumbnails of photos, album covers and movie cover art.
Media Library – This unique feature lets you view all your media by media type in one menu regardless of its location in folders or drives. You can view your content by categories such as genre, album, artist and date.
Search – Search by genre, title, artist, filename and partial filename.
    Photo viewing
Create custom slide shows with a variety of transitions and background music
    Zoom and pan
Search by filename, partial filename, most recently viewed and date
    Movie viewing
Fast forward, rewind, pause, zoom, and pan
    View subtitles
Search by filename, partial filename, most recently viewed and date
    Music playback
Fast forward, rewind, pause, shuffle, repeat
Search by filename, partial filename, most recently viewed and date
Access two USB drives simultaneously - Two USB ports on the player let you connect two USB storage devices and access them simultaneously. Our Media Library feature aggregates the content on both drives into one list sorted by media type.
HDMI and composite video connections - The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port lets you connect to the highest quality HDTV or home theater. Additional composite (RCA) outputs ensure compatibility with virtually all television sets.
Includes free media conversion software - ArcSoft MediaConverter™ 2.5 -- a fast, easy-to-use application that converts photo, video, and music files into formats optimized for use on the WD TV HD Media Player.
Ultra-compact design - Fits easily into your entertainment center.

I have this too but still prefer my ATV.

Very convenient to use but I suggest you get an HDMI cable and for its price, this is a good alternative.

EDIT: Oops, didn't read that you will only use this on a regular TV, so the stock AV composite will do.

And it has new updates from the previous versions:

    Version 1.01.02:
    Resolved Issues:

Resolved the issue surrounding updating the firmware from a large (500GB or larger) drive, previously the WDTV™ would not recognize the updated firmware on a large drive
    Known Issues:

When image is rotated 90 degrees there is some elongation in the rotated view

If the user unsafely removes an HFS+ formatted drive from the media player without using the Eject button, the drive will become read only media

    Version 1.01.01:
    New Features:

Added .MKV chapter selection for video playback for MKV with chapter support

    Added .MTS file extension support

    Added .TP file extension support

    Added .TS file extension support

    Added 1080p 24hz support

Added disk volume name to folder navigation in list mode

Added EXIF orientation flag functionality for auto picture rotate

    Added file size in filename

Added jump feature to the remote: While fast forwarding or reversing, if the “Next” or “Prev” buttons are pressed, video will jump 10 minutes in the respective direction

Added progress indicator for the duration of the FF or REV function

Added a blinking status LED behavior while drive is mounting; previously the light just stayed on

Added sequential .M2TS file playback function

Added additional subtitle support (SMI, SUB, ASS, SSA)

Added user selectable font size for subtitle support

Added song title scroll in music playback to prevent truncation

Added embedded subtitle display in .MKV files

Added additional subtitle encoding support for the following: Western Europe (ISO), Traditional Chinese (Big5), Simplified Chinese (GB18030), Japanese (Shift-JIS), Korean (EUC-KR), Cyrillic (Windows-1251), Cyrillic (KOI8-R), Greek (ISO); previously only UTF-8 was supported

Added display sizing menu for photo playback: Fit to Screen, Full Screen, Keep as Original

Added accelerating scroll speed based on how long the arrow is held down on the remote when navigating folders with a large number of files; previously only one, constant speed was available

Saw this product when I bought the 1TB HD, and it retails at P5.6K in GH, any files that it can't play?

There are some mkv files 'out there' that will not play the audio even if you switch from digital to stereo. Other than that, it can play almost any format.

I may have seen one on the shelf for sale at Ynzal last week. But I'm not 100% on that.

So far the only problem for is the 1080p playback, once your file is encoded with 25fps or higher you're going to experience a stuttering/pixelated effect on your screen...but the rest for me is stop on!

I bought one. So far, I've encountered only a few avi files it has problem playing, the video lags. I suspect this maybe because of some exotic codec. But for the most part its great, its played most of my videos. I love the portability.

Read this very good review from the gadgeteer

There's a demo unit running at Sights and Sounds, Shangri-la Mall. It plays 1080p files great. They sell it for P 5,400.

Thanks guys. Just ordered one for myself via Amazon for $97 with free shipping here to New Jersey together with my Slingbox Pro-HD and Sling Catcher. Hope I don't exceed my airline baggage weight limit with all the stuff I'm bringing home. Hehehe.

you can zoom in or out, but the increments are fixed at 50%. You can also move the video area up, down, left, or right if you have overscanning problems. But you can't stretch or crop.

Got one 3 weeks ago from Amazon at $99. Now I can fully appreciate 720p movies! Can't wait for the rumored DTS decoder/mixdown firmware update since my bundled home theater doesn't have an optical in port.

Got one as a present. Great item, also gives flexibility to one's entertainment system. You can use this for any flash/hard drive inserted into it. Before, I used a mac format hd for this system but i reformatted it into fat32 so it will sort properly.

you can also use MAC OS Extended as WDTV doesn't support journaled. But you can still use the playback feature on journaled formatted drives.

fantastic media player. personally love it over the popcorn hour. to be honest, i convinced my friends to purchase a player with the seagate sale. last time i checked, there were more than 30 who confirmed they loved it.

FAT32-formatted hard drives have a limit on the file size of a single file (4GB). So you cannot save all 1080p and some 720p movies on it.
