VOIP for Mac?

Are there any VOIP apps that are Mac-friendly?

Actually, I've never tried VOIP at all (not even on a PC) so this is all new to me. I keep on hearing about it from PC users but haven't heard of any Mac users with a program on their machines that allows them to do this too.

Do any of you have one? If so, are the programs downloadable from version tracker or similar sites?

    Thanks.

iChat AV which comes in Panther (OSX 10.3) is by far the best audio/video/chat program for the MAC. I use it everyday doing real-time audio/video chats with my girlfriend in the US, she uses a MAC with iChat AV as well. You will have to set-up a .MAC account or an AIM account to use iChat AV. Once you have that you are all set and ready to go.

Check it out, its lurking around in your applications folder.

BTW, just wanted to say that the E36 is one amazing car ;)

i agree! audio chat in i-chat IS amazing! for the times that i've tried it, the audio exchange is even clearer than the cell sometimes.

i have used skype and sipphone, as well as ichat. more money sunk into sipphone, so that's primary for now. ichat is computer to computer, i use sipphone for computer to land lines or mobiles.

    thanks!

those replies came quick! thanks guys.

vic also texted me about skype. will be downloading it tonight. i never really bothered to set up ichat before since i don't have a .mac or aol account.

but i'm starting to think about signing up for .mac since i'll be switching to dsl soon. the account only comes with one email addy, which i'll be giving to the boss of the house. so i guess it's time to use ichat.

    thanks!

@whitecomet, yep, the e36 truly is one great ride. mine is 10 years old and it still handles as well as it did when it was fresh out of the dealer! now if i could only save enough to get the one with the "M" on the trunk...

For best results, you can hook-up a mic & headset combo into the audio in & out jacks for crystal clear clarity :)

Hope you got over the inital shock of the big aluminum drop. Count your blessings - your LCD is working and your HD is booting.

For best results, please consult our search function. Try it out, it's really simple. Just type in 'VOIP' (without the quotes) in the little field in the top right corner. in fact, it's just like Google, except the results are limited to PhilMUG discussions.

    Actually, Google works too. :)

    Thanks.

Question: is there a way for iChat AV to communicate with an equivalent in the Wintel world?

I've seen my sister use Skype with a friend who is using a Wintel. Voice communication is great -- even on dial-up!
