Hi, anybody here using Virtual PC? I know Mac is a powerful machine but I still need to run some of my software (no mac equivalent yet) in Windows.

    1. Can I utilize Mac's built-in Bluetooth in Virtual PC?

Hi McWilly, there a lot of Virtual PC users here. Sadly, I'm not one of them and can't answer your questions. Doing a search using "virtual PC" can link you to a lot of related threads.
How do you plan to "utilize" the Mac's bluetooth with VPC?

so far ive had no luck getting to run both the built-in and the dongle bluetooth modules in vpc. you are also better off using a real pc since the software is so friggin slow, e.g. a 1+GHz mac will only register as a 200+MHz pentium 2. also, just because the mac is powerful it does not mean its faster, pc processors are still faster despite what apple tells us. :sour:

I'm using GuestPC to do my window specific tasks. Its a cheap and very good alternative to VPC. I use it for Internet banking and to check if my websites work well under IE and other browsers for PC. It is not realy slow - you can work easy with it, that is a quality I appreciate from GuestPC. http://www.lismoresystems.com/

Hi I'm a Virtual PC user also just recently, and I'm in it's testing phase of learning and doing stuff pertaining to it, so to speak!

I finally found a good reason to try out what the fuss is all about, and I say it's pretty darn interesting so far! I mean, I left the PC world when our computer at home was still 286 (or maybe it was 386?), then we bought our Performa 5320, and then an iMac (for me!), and we never looked back. :embarrased:

Going back to topic, there are limitations of course inside the Virtual PC environment, but there are workarounds in every situation I'm sure. I'll let you know my opinions once I come across your particular situation, and how I get around to working it (if ever). :shy:

Moreover, what software/application/situation in particular are you trying to make bluetooth work in your Mac (and in what Windows OS version inside Virtual PC)? Please provide more info, so everybody could give a more detailed suggestion, ok. :D

BTW, I've installed Borland Turbo C++ 3.0 (to Windows 98 that's installed into Virtual PC 6) for my brother-in-law who's in college (I'm helping him upgrade his recently purchased used iMac 233MHz, in order for him to finally ditch his PC & all the virus/spyware bad stuff altogether; and convince him of course of it's benefits and cost-effectiveness!), and so far so good.

Guest PC has been benchmarked to be around 30-50% SLOWER than Virtual PC...

I know the benchmarking is slower in reviews of Guest PC. But after actual using it - i'm very satisfied.

    I agree with:
    - slower benchmarking on many websites/personal reviews
    - less features then VPC
    - it has certain limits

    But:
    - installation was painless and faster than VPC demo
    - has a very good windows installer with automatic configuration
    - runs Windows XP without dragging windows, etc...
    - great support from the company behind guest pc
    - I can see and share everything on my network
    - surf the internet without problems - no configuration required
    - never had a crash, and runs any software I tested (I could even sync my P800 with the usb cradle in XP, which is not supported in osx)

    - and is half the price of VPC

For me both programs are good, I only wanted to point out there are alternatives to VPC, which for occasional use can be a good alternative.

Thanks for the response guys. Actually I still have my Win XP PC at home, but I'm planning to dispose it and converge all my data on my Mac including my mobile sms archive. Last time, I was using Float Mobile to sync my PC and mobile. I find it quite useful and I dont want to shell out some hundred bucks for mobile software that I'm not yet quite satisfied.

One of the services Bluetooth device offer is serial port connectivity (Com Port). Bluetooth PDAs and handphones connects to PC's via these ports. Here are the steps to make BT work for VPC's Apps:

    1. pair the bluetooth device to the powerbook as usual (Via OSX' Bluetooth Setup Wizard)

    2. go to Utilities > Bluetooth Serial Utility > New > Create Name, say "BT1" > Port direction: Outgoing > Select device: bluetooth paired in step 1

    3. Open Virtual PC Settings > COM1 Port > select Mac Serial Port > Select BT1 (name created in Bluetooth Serial Utility) > Ok

    4. Open Your VPC > Your Bluetooth Device Apps > Set Serial Port/COM Port in your Apps to COM 1

    5. Connect your device, sync and Enjoy

    Hope this helps...

Thanks. Good to hear that. Our clinic database runs on Windows 2000. We've been planning to put our database in our Macs. DOn't know if we could develop a program for Mac in our database format without violating any copyright laws. :X: We still have some bugs with Windows.

i think only an updated version of virtual pc 7 will work properly in tiger (the retail 7.0 version is quirky if not updated running on tiger)...
