macosxhints.com has posted a wonderful, undocumented feature in iPhoto 6.0.4. When a camera is plugged in, and the import screen is in front, double click the return key (yes, just like a mouse, but on your keyboard) and you'll be able to view the images in the camera as if they were an iPhoto source. the image will appear in edit mode, and you can zoom in, but you will not be able to edit it at all. The thumbnail viewer will appear at the top though. From there, you can drag and drop the thumbnail to add the images into the iPhoto library. Although the hint says they had an issue with inaccurate dates, I tried it our and it worked just fine. I suspect the reason Apple doesn't make this feature known is because it may not work with all cameras. My Canon digital Ixus iZoom, works well with it. My only issue is that the thumbnails appeared as gray boxes. Not much of an issue if importing one pic at a time (since the selected thumbnail displays in full anyway). Try it out and let us know if it works with your camera (please state the your camera's model, of course).
I tried it with a Canon Ixus 30 and it worked! But the thumbnails appeard as white/grey boxes on mine too.
hi elbert, this is somehow related to your thread. The first time i opened my iphoto, it asked wheter i want iphoto to launch everytime i connect my camera to my ibook. Is there any way to disable this command? Thanks
Neat! Cant wait to try it, Gets rid of importing all images and deleting all the unwanted. Now i can choose directly from my digital cam. If Annings Ixus works, well i guess my Ixus 50 will. Thanks man.
Yes. Just launch Image Capture from the Utilities folder. In its preferences settings, you select from a list of options what you want the system to do when a camera is connected.
Reviving an old thread. I just tried this trick using an Ixus 900 Ti. Unfortunately, it didn't work! Care to share your experience? Please let us know if it works or not with your camera. Thanks.
Works on my end with a DSLR - Canon 350D... I was waiting for this feature on iPhoto and now it's here, but again thumbnails just show in grey boxes.
i used a card reader from cdr king. the one that looks like a thimb drive. its a card reader for sd/mmc with my sd card in it and it worked!!! altho the thumbnails are blacked out... the viewing pictures work! thanks
it works with my camera too! i have a sony cybershot 4.1MP model DSC-P43 digicam. thanks for this info elbert!
