As most of you are aware, Apple bundles a free calculator with OSX. What most don't know about Calculator is that it can perform more than just basic functions.

First of all, you can change the view from Basic to Scientific or Programmer.

Secondly, in Basic view, you can make basic conversions for area, length, temperature, etc. There's even Currency, which can be updated with the latest rates (sadly, no Philippine Peso in the list). Simply punch in a value on the calculator then select any of the available conversion tools from the Convert menu.

Okay, so the above two are pretty obvious, especially to someone who takes notice of menu commands.

Here's something most of you probably don't know.

Under View, select Show Paper Tape (if it's not showing yet). In paper tape, directly type in any algebraic formula. Not only will it accept the +. -, * and / symbols, it will accept parenthesis as well. For example type (50*24.5)/(50-32). To get the answer, click the Recalculate Totals. Voila!

    Go ahead, try it out!

Yup, now you won't have to launch Excel just to perform non-simple computations. You can even copy the contents of the paper tape and paste into other applications.

is there a way to hack the currency conversion list? nakakafrustrate lang di ba na walang philippine peso. hahaha. it would've been a great tool especially for those times that you're fantasizing on new mac stuff from the apple store and you'd want to know how much you'd have to save up for it. hahahaha.
