you don't have to like leica (i know--overpriced, overrated, and all that) to like this wonderful essay from the new yorker on "the cult of leica": http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/09/24/070924fa_fact_lane/ great reportage!
Sir Butch, I have money to burn, I'll be collecting leica!!! Promise ko sa sarili ko before I die I will own a leica hahaha
i went to one of the leica stores in frankfurt and it seemed more like a club's gallery / watering hole than a store. very classy.
My acupuncturist, who's also a mac-user, owns a working Russian version of the Leica, a Zorki (I am not really into this but the camera and Dr. Ed's story about the camera impressed me). Check this out.
My first Leica lens bought only a month ago from eBay: Even the wifey got addicted and started shooting with it
I use it on my Canon 20D Butch Bought an adapter so I can fit it in my camera. The adapter gives an electronic auto focus assist so the focusing screen lights up when you achieve focus. Here's a sample shot taken by the wifey: And a 100% crop:
leave it to the new yorker to make this relevant and entertaining at the same time. surprisingly (for me anyway) is how the best articles about sports come from a literary magazine. they had probably the best article about one of my favorite players Manny Rarmirez (a player on the Red Sox mind you) who's actually most likely a functional autistic (savant). the new yorker articles are usually a good way to relax and learn something from entertainment and through osmosis.
he also owns a lot of rangefinders including the digital epson RF. he and i are members of RFFilipinas which was formed years ago by Jay Javier. i own the cheaper but good russian Fed2.
the articles make out leica fans as mac fans after a few more decade. i wonder when mac fans will do a paper on the merits of a seagate 7200.8 pata drive manufactured in china vs a wd raptor drive made in singapore within a iMac G5 body, first batch sent to the Philippines.
Lester, Just like you, a friend, Bobby Wong influenced my into trying out a Leica lens for my DSLR body. Here's one done with the Canon 1DsMk2. A Leica 60mm Elmarit with an EOS adpter. I am learning, and loving every minute of it. Next target, a 28mm R lens. If you know anyone selling a pre-owned unit, paki text mo si Kuya ha! //Derick
Sir Butch, Thanks for posting the link. It is indeed a great read. I have always admired Leica for the quality of their camera's and lenses. But after reading about the Leica Freedom Train I found myself admiring the company even more. "The Leica Freedom Train" video
Kuya Derick, was in fact corresponding with Bobby Wong when I ordered the adapter from eBay. He told me he was encouraging a couple of friends to get Leica lenses too. BTW, am also eyeing that 60mm Elmarit-R macro of yours But will get the Summicron 35mm first. Sent you a PM on the 28mm. Am pretty sure you're gonna go for the mint version, haha.
How do you order from ebay? any orders coming up? baka puwede maki sabay? Here's another shot! Thanks for the tips, and if you find way for me to get one kindly notify me. Kahit pre-owned Sumicron or Summilux, 24 or 28mm. Brand new is too much for a learning curve "itch".
I sent the link to my friend, and since he has the dough, he'll get the mint unit for USD 1,300+, and I'm getting his unit!!! Hopefully, within a couple of weeks the darn thing gets delivered! Here's another output of the 60mm Elmarit R!!! Learning and loving every minute!
I actually email my cousin in the states who has a PayPal account to bid for me. So far no orders for this year but let me know. BTW, saw this Leica R6 book in Fully Booked in Serendra last night. Lots of illustrations on almost all the R lenses there. And one Leica lens expert named Erwin Puts has put up his own website with some information and articles here NP. BTW, where you able to get some shots off from your 60mm where the highlights of the bokeh appear to be round? Noticed the highlights from your Coke pic to be hexagonal.
