Good news! The classic Star Control 2 is now an Open Source project.
This is still an alpha build so it still has bugs. It even has issues running under OS X 10.4 but it has workarounds for the bug found in the FAQ wiki pages.

I tried it out a little and it actually looks quite good. Super Melee mode is perfect for that quick game against the computer.

Have a look around at http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ and try it out puny hunam!

It might be better to try out the "unofficial" version from http://www.submedia.net/uqm/ since it has a pre-game setup menu for setting configuration options before launching the game.

Currently, I created an executable script for setting the command-line parameters when running the game. I still need to run this script in the Terminal app. The unofficial version detailed above allows setting the options using a pre-game setup menu so it's more accessible to newbies.

I had a little trouble figuring out the control keys while playing Super Melee last night:

    Controls:
The arrow keys control the ship's movement ala asteroids
The right shift key activates the ship's special.
The right control key fire's your ship's weapon.

F10/F11 is Quit and Abort in full-screen mode.
command-F10/command-F11 does the same thing in windowed mode.

    This game still rocks! :)

Update: The "unofficial" mac version is definitely better! Just remember to use Open GL.
