Napansin ko lang kahapon that my Spotlight just stopped working. Using a 1.42 Mini PPC running 10.4.10 512RAM

The old search function still works (Apple + f) so does the search field in regular windows, but my Spotlight has gone completely kaput. Mousing, clicking, etc. over the magnifying glass logo does nothing.

Any thoughts as to what's causing this and suggetions on how to fix it?

i have this problem every once in a while and i still don't know what causes it. the solution (at least for me) is easy, though: just restart. it doesn't happen too often (about three times in the past 11 months) so i just live with it.

i remember something similar happened to my MBP a few months back when i was still on 10.4.8. it would launch the spotlight search bar but refuses to find files as you type. sometimes a reboot would fix it, sometimes it didn't. i then decided to use quicksilver as an alternative until i upgraded to 10.4.9.

try repairing disk permissions or verify your disk. it might help.

Here's what I did to fix a similar recurring problem:

I downloaded a free app called MainMenu (google it). Once its running, click on Rebuild -> Rebuild spotlight index...
MainMenu will then issue a warning that tells you that rebuilding the index will take a long time, just click on OK and be patient while it rebuilds your index.
Just to be sure, restart your machine after the rebuild and spotlight should work.
