Hi fellows, I have an old Powerbook G4 running 10.3.9, and a 2007 iMac running 10.4. I plan to buy an OSX 10.5 family pack soon, but I am wondering if it is worth waiting for Snow Leopard to come around? Some have said that it 10.6 will release in June. Regarding my need for it, right now my iMac does NOT have a drastic need for an upgrade (10.4 is close), but the Powerbook running 10.3.9 is just too old and can't run some of the new apps anymore, so it needs the upgrade asap. An alternative is to just upgrade the powerbook and wait for Snow leopard to come around for the other machine, but he problem with this approach is that its much, much cheaper to buy a family pack, than just buying one license. Anyway, let me know what you guys think.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but snow leopard will not run on non-intel machines. the primary advantage of snow leopard is grand central, which optimizes a computer's multi-processor. so most of powerpc mac users will not benefit from this. the other snow leopard feature: 64-bit osx. again, not something most powerpc users will benefit from. the good news is leopard support will continue. apple won't alienate those who cannot run snow leopard, and there are a lot of them. bottomline: buy leopard now. or save your money, and buy an intel mac later, which will likely come bundled with snow leopard.
Thanks, Rbenzon. I guess this simply means its "buy Leopard now" time for me. What attracted me to Snow Leopard is that its also supposedly the smallest OS yet, implying that it will perform livelier than previous OS.
that's right, randyq. i read somewhere (if my memory serves me right) that mail in leopard is 200+mb, whereas it's only 90mb+ in snow. that's what code refactoring will get you: efficiency. but i think it also has to do with an improved kernel, all in its 64-bit glory. snow will be more cocoa-based than ever, which will contribute to lighter apps (less overhead for legacy carbon support) whereas tiger and leopard where both "burdened" by the legacy carbon api. just the same, leopard is a worthy upgrade. heck, for me, parental control alone was worth the price of admission. but, of course, it comes with much more. good for you. cheers!
Leopard is great already but snow leopard might be even greater, Snow Leopard caught on camera. Any idea how much would this be when they come out? just a ballpark figure?
if my macbook runs on tiger now, i can upgrade directly to snow leopard when it comes out? no need to upgrade to leopard first?
I think there are no final requirements yet until WWDC June they say. But definitely runs on Intel based mac only: Leopard will now require Macs with "an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor." Other system requirements include a DVD drive, built-in FireWire, at least 512MB of RAM (additional recommended), and at least 9GB of hard disk space. AppleInsider This is not a good sign, I was thinking of getting Powerbook 15inch pa naman. But I think its still safe for the next year or so, PowerPCs can run Leopard 10.5. Depends really on ones requirements.
