I have always wondered how people use their MacBooks. Are you the type who just closes the laptop at the end of your day or do you shut it down?

What are its effects on the batteries and the life of the MacBook?

Is there an appropriate way of closing your machine when you are done using it or the day?

half of the week i sleep the other half i shut down. really depends on what im doing or what i need to get done. thing that bothers me is always having it plugged. i feel like the battery is gonna over charge or worst blow up. it happens!

Sleep all the time. I only shut down when needed i.e. software updates.

Most Mac users put their Macs to sleep instead of shutting it down completely. Sleep drain on the battery will be very minimal, it takes very little power to keep the sleep light "snoring". This is what I'd recommend since it's much more convenient for you, no need to wait for the machine to boot up. Your machine is ready as soon as you open the lid. If you'll be using your machine often, I don't see any disadvantage in putting your Mac to sleep vs. shutting it down.

When you close your MacBook's lid to put it to sleep, just make sure that the sleep light starts "snoring" before you transport it. This makes sure that the hard disk has stopped spinning completely and has been "parked", minimizing the chance of data loss in the event of a sudden drop or vibration.

I never shutdown my MacBook Pro (and PowerBook before that) because I use it everyday. I suggest you shutdown your MacBook if you won't be using it for a day or more.

@raze94, it's okay to keep your Mac plugged in whenever you have the chance, as long as you run it on battery power once in a while (every couple of days or so). Also, you can unplug it when you go to bed if it will make you more comfortable :)

Sleep. I rarely shutdown. I only do that if i'll be out-of-town without my Mac.

I completely understand, it's actually not a bad idea to unplug your Mac at night (unless it's busy doing something and you want to make sure it won't run out of power in the middle of the night).

Just sleep. It only consumes a little of your battery life. :)

I shutdown at night. Not too annoyed with the start up time so I try to shutdown when not in use.

I safe sleep instead since there are isolated cases when your macs are stored in the bags and they suddenly wake up from sleep and causes extreme heat build up inside the bag (this happened to me once and it was as hot as an iron...)
