Ok, this may be a stupid question, but i tried searching and found no answers.

How do you prevent Skype from opening on startup?

    Thanks.

Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. You will be shown a list of the items that launch at startup/login. Simply remove Skype from the list by highlighting it and then clicking the "-". You can also remove and add other startup items this way.

Or press ctrl-mouse button (trackpad or one-button mouse)...

And for those using a 2-button mouse, right-click the Skype icon on the dock, then uncheck "Open at Login".
