I'm coming up with a tutorial on editing. So I need to capture screens or windows and be able save it as an MOV file. what software do i need ? tnx
My favorite is iShowU. You can also use Mouseposé along with it. Mouseposé lets you highlight your mouse and you can set it to display on screen any key you type on the keyboard.
FYI lang (may not be applicable to your requirement @imacron): For 'just' capturing the screen, a portion of the screen or window you can use the "Grab utility" found inside the utilities folder of your mac. Grab saves them as picture files (TIFF, JPEG, PIC). Grab takes screenshots only but it's the simplest built-in screenshot software in our macs.
If you use command-shift-3 you can actually take a picture of your screen and it will appear in your desktop as a .png file. if you use command-shift-4, you will get cross hairs which you can move to the place you want to highlight with your mouse and once you release the mouse or your trackpad clicker, you will take a picture of the area you highlighted. You can then add those pictures into your imovie to make your presentation. No need to buy all this software. Hope this helps.
In addition to your post... you can even take screenshot of an open window in place of the cross-hair (no need to highlight) As what you have mention, pressing ⌘-⇧-4 shows a cross-hair for the cursor. Now, press spacebar to turn the cursor to a camera. Choose any open window on your desktop and place your cursor (now a camera) on top of it then click. Voila! A new picture file (.png) is now on your desktop. double click it appears a preview image of your screenshot.
Screeflow.
Is there a way to take screenshots using either the key-combination above and/or Grab application and save it not on the Desktop but instead into Documents? I can't find it in System Prferences nor in Grab's Preferences. I hate taking screenshots and adding clutter to my Desktop. Thanks.
