I visit gamespot often and other gaming sites that require Windows Media Player to stream videos. Now everytime I click on a link, it automatically goes to VLC instead of WM. How do I configure it so that it goes to WM instead of VLC?

    AFAIK...

right click on a wmv file, select get info...
change the selection open with VLC and change it to Windows Media.

then try it out with a streaming WM file.... i believe that should work

Nope. Tried that but it's still VLC that pops up. Can I just delete VLC so that WM takes precedence?

You have to figure out what file format they are streaming. For all you know, it's not windows media. If that's the case, even if you set .wmv files to open with Windows Media, it still won't work. FYI, gamespot videos have no problem playing on Windows Media in Safari.

You could also trash Windows Media (and all prefs files associated with it) and reinstall the app. That will reset all the Windows Media Player prefs.
