a good working Apple iSight, if you can still find one & if the price is ok for you is indeed a good choice. but if you are on a budget, an A4tech webcam available at PC Options in Gilmore for about 800 pesos is good enough. just make sure you buy a current model, one which uses the usb connection both for the camera & audio (no audio port connection needed), with the info "mac os x" on the label.
hard to find a webcam that works on the powerbook or ibook or on any non-intel macs other than the isight...
Most 'PC only' webcams work in Macs if you install Macam. I have tried Logitech's QuickCam which says for XP and Vista only. It worked for Yahoo Messenger and I also tried recording using Quicktime. But for iChat and PhotoBooth, sad to say, it doesn't work.
I tried a pc webcam on my powerg4 using macam, i cud preview it on macam but yahoo messenger says camera not connected
@angelomb3: What Yahoo Messenger version are you using? My Logitech still works good even with the latest beta update of YM.
the last thing you want to do is buy a cam that won't work with ichat, photobooth, imovie, etc.! or one that will work with some, but not all. get isight. if budget's a constraint, look for pre-owned isights.
update guys: I too have been a user of an iSight & the alternative cheap webcam with macam, but the latest A4tech 800 peso webcams (USB only, no audio jack) are now mac compatible and have their own installer CDs. so iSights, desirable and more compatible as they are, are no longer the only choice. cheap webcams with os x compatibility even for PowerPC Macs are now in the market! *proof: used that A4tech 800 peso clip webcam with my former Powerbook G4 1.5ghz 12". Worked with Skype, Yahoo, PhotoBooth - hopefully, iMovie.
hi nydge. I am not familiar with the Logitech webcams, can you please tell me the exact model of your Logitech QuickCam? Thanks.
@pcalday: The box of of my webcam says 'QuickCam Messenger'. I am also having a hard time looking for the model no. It looks like this. Here's the list of Macam supported webcams. Look for your webcam in the list.
@ nyde: Thank you. It's a great help especially the link which provides the list of webcams which works on Mac OSX.
@pcalday: You're welcome. Still the best way to check compatibility is to install Macam first then plug your USB webcam then launch the Macam application. Please update us if it works with you. Goodluck.
