My favorite is still Mission Impossible 3 because of Philip Seymour Hoffman's menacing portrayal of the villain.

I watched Renegades starring Sullivan Stapleton and thought it was a remake of Strike Back...I was wrong; it was more like Strike Out...4/10

Watched "Buy Bust". First Filipino film I've seen at the cinema in decades. I hoped to be impressed, sadly, I wasn't. The plot was apropos to the current political climate, but its screenplay and dialog were mediocre and weighed the film down. The character development was almost non-existent. The acting spotty and, to be honest, sub par. The sound and sound editing was horrendous. The camera work was inspired at times, but mostly run of the mill action fluff.
The message was important but was lost in the chaos of a movie that didn't quite know what it wanted to be.
I was prepared to like it, really, but half-way into the movie, I just wanted the credits to roll .

    Mission Impossible: Fall Out

Action packed, fast paced and relentlessly thrilling, truly a worthy installment to the Mission Impossible franchise. Tom Cruise is no James Bond, he does not need to, as he can command his own presence as an propulsive agent, with optimism, vigor and sleekness. With outstanding fight choreography and elaborate action set pieces, nearly bordering with strenuous, it still provided a dazzling and engaging experience in the cinema that I never felt the need to check on the time on my watch.

    8.5/10.

Filipino films never really interest me in general, partly due to the fact that I was scarred so many times with the entries from Metro Manila Film Festival and other general releases. Ann Curtis does not really appeal to me as a bonafide actress with a broad range, as she strikes me as one-dimensional hence I am not surprised with your review.

Watched BuyBust in a foreign country—not Thailand, where BuyBust could've had a happy ending. :D

    My TL;DR:
Creative brief: "Make a Pinoy LA Confidential"
    Director's vision/peg: Black Hawk Down
    End result: Walking Deadma
    :)

Overall, it could've used a generous dose of editing, repeatedly cut like it was cocaine. :)

Walked in, hoping for an OMG.
Walked out with an "Umay God". ;)

But having watched abroad, at least I had the luxury of focusing on the English subtitles.

Thanks for your micro review rbenzon. I was reading a few reviews of Buy Bust online and I was beginning to wonder if it was the same movie I saw.

Everything is relative, Mike. Presumably, this is better than what most Viva churns out, or the typical sappy flicks.

And Anne did reasonably well. The rookie cop vulnerability was there, but she moved/fought convincingly, like an actress who has had boxing/MMA gym membership even before she signed up for this film. Can't think of an A-list Pinay who could've fought convincingly, without throwing fine china. ;)

But having been in telco, you are familiar with the acronym OTT, the category of Netflix, Hooq, iFlix, etc. This film was better suited on those platforms, but for a different reason, because it literally was OTT—Over The Top. :)

Not a bust, but not a buy either. Rent. :)

    Jurassic World-9/10

Really enjoyed the thrills this movie provided us.

Christmas Prince- Nice romantic Netflix movie.

Three Days To Kill-an entertaining comedy action film by Kevin Costner

Avengers Infinity War-the hype killed it hahaha

Now that I feel is a much more agreeable verdict. I mean, it couldn't be all bad. And I've been seeing good feedback, somewhat mixed, based on my FB feed, and then on this forum.

You might have a point that it may be better suited to go direct to a more on-demand platform instead of the big screen but since I haven't seen it, and probably will never get a chance to, unless it finds itself in Netflix nga, then I guess I'll never know.

Do we give Viva an "A" for effort?

I read Netflix will start streaming Buy Bust starting Nov 1. There were times it seemed over the top, some parts made me feel like its Train to Manila from Busan or maybe it was intended to be that way, given the politics its trying to imply. Its poverty porn from start to finish. But must admit its a brave film specially the last 20 mins which generally summed up the message.

I wanted to like Buy Bust, but...they really should have edited it down to about an hour and 20 minutes and then it would have worked much better for me. The gratuitous violence was so repetitive it lost its thrill/shock value after the first few action scenes. And instead of advancing a story, the film was just more of the same gratuitous violence going on and on and on. So this is around 6.5/10 for me. Brandon Vera was actually pretty good though so he gets an 8.5/10 for his role.

    Buy Bust. 4/10

    Ugh I hated it!

I'm wondering why many people loved it?

Maybe I was just expecting too much (post-OTJ).

Erik Matti's view on government's war against illegal drugs, for me is out of touch.

Such polarizing reviews of Buy Bust. Thankfully, my trusty old gut feel helped me avoid such disappointment. I might catch it on Netflix nalang. It has everything going for it: word of mouth, television and social media hype, as well as $1M budget. -- Just not proper editing.

Again, I'm happy for PH cinema and how it's evolving, hopefully, the next one would learn from this.

I'm happy to put the nail on the coffin of romcoms and comedies as sure box office hits.

I've been really curious about Buybust, though some of my friends are of course raving about it since they're connected with the film. But I do also take into consideration the opinion of Muggers, because I can somehow relate to most people here. Just wondering how things are rated nowadays, it's a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Though at this point, I'm with
@rdy0329, will probably not catch it in the theatres at this rate :ROFLMAO:

Yeah. It doesn't mean much though as the 100% rotten tomatoes score is based on just 6 critic reviews.

The Jurassic World is 28% in Rotten Tomatoes while 88% of Google readers love the movie hahaha.

The Spy Who Dumped Me. Mila Kunis has made me laugh in Bad Moms but seeming lack of chemistry with Kate McKinnon makes me think of Rebel Wilson who could have slayed the role of the latter. I kinda like the action portion where every intense gunshot is akin to those heard in Bourne and Mission Impossible. 6/10
