AFAIK, you would not be able to use your @mac.com or @me.com email address anymore. You would be losing access and I think it's the same as losing your emails, unless of course if you forward all of 'em to say, yahoo or gmail.

    Good luck!

If you have other email accounts from AIM, Gmail, your ISP, your office, etc. then you can use Mail.app to retrieve email from them via POP or IMAP. Mail.app wasn't designed to be used exclusively for MobileMe.

I can understand that you will not get any mail from .mac if your subscription has expired.

However, what you experienced with Gmail is quite strange. Could you remember if you used POP or IMAP? I have used both (currenly using IMAP), and I have not experienced a time when I could not retrieve anything from Gmail (except when the Gmail server is down of course).

If you used POP and have already retrieved your email from another computer (wherein the option to delete retrieved mail from server was set to yes), then that explains it.

Also, I'm assuming that you set-up the Gmail account separately in Mail.app. That is, you did not forward your Gmail emails to .mac so that you can use Mail.app to receive mail just from one account (.mac).

So we don't stray too much off topic for this thread, try searching the forums on how to setup Mail.app so you can retrieve mail from Gmail. I believe that there are at least a couple of threads discussing the steps necessary. You can also Google for the topic.

As reivi400 has already pointed out, you definitely don't need MobileMe/.Mac to use Mail. Mail makes a GREAT Gmail IMAP client (I was using it with POP Gmail before that). I also use it with my ISP's POP email account.
