I just bought the unit last April and now it's starting to hang whenever I play a game. I asked around and they said I should have the lens replaced. Any idea on what causes this? I took care of it really well and kinda got disappointed on how quickly it broke down. How much do you reckon a lens replacement will cost?
is it still under warranty? in gh they charge somewhere between 4500k-6k for lens replacement and the labor. i suggest go to the place where you bought the unit and if its still under warranty you could probably have it replaced or serviced depending on the warranty
Take note as well that certain games are bound to hang sometimes. LIke Fallout 3, Drake's 2, etc. My friend has his lens replaced last june and it cost 5k for the lens and labor. In greenhills. You could ask around there. The reason he had it replaced was because it wouldn't read anymore. Not ps3 games, not bluray, nothing.
too bad!!! i experienced this once with Ratchet and Clank game but revived after reloading the game and then never halted again. I think the game has the problem and not my ps3. if all your games are halting in your ps3, send it for inspection.
Yeah, I even point the electric fan towards it when it gets too hot. Funny thing is my Wii also failed on me. How coincidental.
Yikes. I heard somewhere that pointing fans towards consoles makes 'em more prone to dust buildup. Your PS3 might be overheating because of the dust inside
^i agree. its better to have it sit on a table with nothing nearby that can heat it up or hinder its heat from escaping then having a fan pointed at it
Gah, wrong move! Last question: Is the lens replacement really that pricey? I mean, I know it's a Blu-ray lens and all. My dad's gonna flip when he hears that.
I have a small fan pointed at it from the front to help give in more cool air, more especially when I play Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Apparently, the game pushes the unit to the limit, which makes it heat up quickly. That, combined with our climate here equals a very very hot system. As for dust buildup, I can pass off for that. Anyways, I had my lens replaced last month. I had it replaced at iTech Market-Market for 5.5k. My unit has a single bluray lens, and if you bought your unit last April, I think it has the dual lens, which I heard was cheaper to replace.
Thanks, chipsillesa, that's nice to know. I have a question: are the slim PS3s more "durable" than the original ones?
supposedly they're better equipped to handle a heavier workload. thinking of just selling your off to get a slim?
The PS3 slim's Cell Processors are that of the 45nm process variant, which helps with the power consumption, and also, less stress on the whole unit itself. The PS3 Fat ones, (1st and 2nd gens) use the 90nm process Cell Processors which apparently adds up to the console's temperature build up during long playtimes. The PS3 Slim would also be better than the Fat one since it has BraviaSync... a bonus to those who have a Sony Bravia HDTV with their setup. In an event that my PS3 would eventually die out due to overheat and whatnot... I now find it acceptable to migrate to the Slim... Which is opposite to how I felt duing the PS2 days. So far, there are no reports of PS3 Slims dying out as how the Fat are doing. Then again, its too early to tell.
I would love to get a PS3 Slim. But I have to fix my Fat one first so I could sell it off. I just don't have the money now to get it done. Oh well, a gamer's life is harsh.
