    Hi all:

Just a newbie here, a first-time MAC user. I would like to know what software you would recommend that would protect my MAC from harmful files (viruses and worms).

    Appreciate any input. :)

    opinions please...

i am already using iAntivirus. would it make any significant difference if i switch to Clamvax?

can anyone make a comparison between the two, please?

thanks for any thoughts that would be contributed to my query. :)

sorry bewired but i haven't tried to use iAntivirus so i cant give any suggestions or any differences between the two..

i'am using clamxav and it works fine for me but the only problem is you need to manually choose what folder to scan and you can create a designated folder for those quarantined files.. ( as much as i understand clamxav software.. )..not like those Norton or Mcafee softwares available for Windows..

yeah, with climxav, you actually kinda do the scanning and disinfection manually, sort of.

what about sophos anti-virus? heard of it?

    thanks!

doesn't ring a bell dude.. :( havent heard about sophos.. i will now google it.. hehehe! im curious.. :)

yeah, you're right! we tend to scan our computers manually and disinfect it at the same time.. not too hard but its very effective.. ;)

Why would you need anti-virus software for a Mac? (other than to stop passing on virus's to Windoze)?

I stopped using ClamXav and switched to iAntiVirus a month or two ago.

    1) ClamXav would hog up system resources during scans. To the point where I could hear the fans kick in on maximum RPM.
    2) ClamXav didn't have real-time scanning.

So I switched to iAntiVirus. Much smaller system footprint and provides realtime scanning.

Once I tried to insert an infected thumb drive and see how iAntivirus & ClamXav would react on it. I was surprised with the results. iAntivirus didn't detect any while ClamXav saw them. And to think that both are updated with the virus list from their respective sites.

I therefore conclude that iAntivirus is ineffective so I uninstall it and retain ClamXav to do the task for my system. Try it for yourself to see what I'm talking about.

Thanks for all the thoughts. appreciate it

@Stevezone - i think sophos is ggod, too. i have been using it for a while but it's just that you have to set some of it's preferences with your IP if you want it to work on its own esp. if you want it to auto-update. otherwise, you would have to do it manually. - that's the reason why i shifted to something else.

dryxzzz - thanks. got your point.

    :)

you are right that Mac system can't recognize most of the viruses and worms proliferating in the cyberspace. however, it could get into some of your files and would act like 'dormant' while in your system. once these viruses get the chance to be transferred to other users (i.e. e-mail attachments, USB and other 'vectors'), then, they could be back to their infectious activities.

bottom of it, you also need to be responsible to show concern to other cyberspace users. hope you understood what i was trying to convey. :)

I found out why this is so. It's on the front & about page of the iAntivirus site.

So if you're using it for Windows virus protection & interception, it definitely won't work. Me, I'll keep it. I found the system slowdowns that I had with ClamXav rather annoying and I don't have a BootCamp partition on my system.
