    hi all.

we have an epson cx4100 printer/scanner plugged into an iMac G5. problem is the G5 only sees it as a printer not a scanner. we've done several epson software re-installs and still the same problem.

the epson is fine as i've hooked it up to an MBP and a PC and it works.

i tried vuescan and it scans!

    help please.

Why not just use Vuescan? I use Vuescan too and I get much better results with it than with the software that came with my Canon LiDE 35 scanner.

    i have 49.95 reasons ;)

seriously, our scanning needs are very simple and seldom. the free software is all we really need.

    Got it :)

So you're saying that the Epson software works on an MBP running OS X? Does the MBP and the iMac G5 have the same OS X version?

On the iMac, have you tried creating a new user account (System Preferences -> Accounts) and running the Epson software from there? It'll also be a good idea to update to 10.4.8.

I don't think upgrading to 10.4.8 will solve your particular problem with the scanning software, I just suggested it because it's a good idea to keep your OS X updated because of various bug and security fixes.

Re your scanning problem, you might have to delete the "preferences" file of the Epson scanning software in your main account. Every OS X app has a preference file in each user's Library folder, the preference file contains your own custom configuration for that particular app.

In your main account, use Spotlight and search for the application name and delete any .plist files that are found. For example, let's say the app's name is TextEdit. Enter "textedit" in Spotlight and you'll find a file called "com.apple.TextEdit.plist". That's the preference file for TextEdit. To actually delete the file, click on "Show All" to open the Spotlight window then right-click (or ctrl-click) on the plist file and select "Reveal in Finder". It will open a Finder window with the correct file selected, go ahead and drag that to the Trash.

See if that solves your problem. Keep us posted :)

What did you search for in Spotlight? Did you try searching for just "epson"? What is the actual name of the Epson scanning software?

Hey guys, it might help if you also get the latest or updated software/drivers from Epson's website at http://www.epson.com - please check if this option will work.

If you don't have any other Epson app on the iMac, go ahead and delete the Epson folder in your Preferences folder. Have you also tried repairing permissions already? I'm also presuming that you've downloaded the latest version of the app from Epson, as dominiquejames suggested.
