Download DOSBox and start playing classic DOS games! It's free. But you have to read the accomanying documentation carefully and you need to be comfortable using the terminal to customize it. Tried Master of Magic on it and it works (it's a bit slow though). I wonder if the old X-Com 1 and 2 and Betrayal at Krondor would work?... :qmark:
Just tested Betrayal at Krondor and it runs fine. I just needed to configure the sound, increase the cpu cycles to 3500 and skip frames by 1. Unconfigured, the sound is very choppy. But after the tweaks, the sound is now normal. I tried running XCom 2: Terror from the Deep but I have the windows 95 collector's version and it refused to run. I need to find a copy of the DOS version...
Yeah. I noticed too that MoM required tweaking the CPU cycles and skipping frames - but even after that the sound wasn't perfectly smooth. I hope they come up with a better sound system in the future (witness the SNES and SEGA Genesis emulators).
i remember editing the hex codes of X-Com using Norton Editor and changing the rocket launcher ammo to Armour piercing instead of high explosive. i also remember turning the stun rods into death rods. one tap and enemies explode. i want!
yeah i remember tooling around with hex codes of X Com as well. didn't really want to screw around with the gameplay that much so all i did was rename all my officers after my friends and the commander after me of course. hehe.
i named the girl in my squad with the blaster launcher after my crush. she was turned into a zombie. i cried! :upset: that was like ... 10 years ago ba? omg!
 haha! know what you mean dude. hmmm... next topic sa alabang meet perhaps? hmmm... back on topic: i've already called my friends and asked them if they still have my diskettes of warcraft 1 and Dune. hopefully they still kept those 3.5" floppies. pero X Com pa rin. and X Com Apocalypse!
Hehehe... I let my crush stay inside the Skyranger. She's in charge of mind controlling the aliens.
hmm is the file corrupted? i get "no items on folder" for one mirror and "corrupt file" in the second mirror.
i got that too. but i place the UFO.exe file in the dosbox folder and the app appeared. now i'm trying to figure out how to run the game. been so long since i've used DOS na... hayyy...
There's a special edition of UFO thats designed to run on new PCs. Its unlikely that you'll get the old version working but worth a try anyhow. I'll see If I can get my new version working...
Well hello old friend... Whad'ya know... it works! Complete with sound effects and music. After Dune, this is the greatest strategy game ever created in my book. I remember sleepless summer nights playing this. Sweeeeet! Oh to be a kid again. But I'll settle for this... Eat hot plasma alien scum! All your base are belong to us! Caveat: its impossibly slow on my iMac 400, so you'll probably need something close to a 1 GHZ mac to play it smoothly. [Edited on 8-25-2005 by Kenneth]
For anyone who can't get it to work on Tiger -- The zip file seems to be corrupted and I tried putting the game in the same folder as Dosbox (as shrubber mentioned) and even vice versa but I still couldn't get it up and running. I tried Radnor w/c is a front-end launcher for Dosbox but that didn't work either. But finally, I got Petitbox which works just fine. It's another front-end launcher for Dosbox and comes w/ a PDF file that gives you step by step instructions for making it work and dealing w/ common problems. Petitbox needs the SDL runtime libraries to run and you can get that here. [Edited on 8-26-2005 by jor]
Odd, I didn't have any trouble at all. You're not supposed to put it in the same folder. Once dos box is launched, simply type "intro" for instructions on how to "mount" the folder with games.
