    1. can i partition a drive from 80gb to 70gb and 10gb without formatting it?
    2. if am done with the partition, can i make the 70/10gb into a full 80gb again?

If you are going to be using Disk Utility.......

    1) Yes you can...... by formatting it as Free Space
    2) Yes, you can by partitioning the drive again.

But, if you are writing data, then you will need to format the partitions. Also, partitioning a drive will wipe out the current data in the drive.
