Leopard works for the iBook but nor Snow Leopard.
My wife used to have it running pretty decent on an iBook G4 before it got replaced by a Macbook.
There's a thread on Leopard or iBooks somewhere here, go look around.

I have OS X Leopard 10.5.7 on my iBook G4 1.2ghz 1.25gb ram. Leopard also worked with just 512mb ram. Some iLife 09 apps won't work though. But that is a different matter. Safari 4 works well.
