Hello. When I upgraded to iPhoto 6, the way the library (source list) is organized has changed from "by date" to "by roll." I am having a hard time looking for photos. I tried searching here and the help section of iphoto but I did not find the answer to my problem. Is there a way to change this? Thanks!

Under View, click 'Sort Photos' -> 'by Date'

Thanks for the response sir. But what I meant was the library in the finder.

This is how it looked like before:
Finder>Pictures>iPhoto Library>Data>2006>10>25 (if you want to look for pics taken on oct 25 2006) and so on

And this is how it looks like now:
    Finder>Pictures>iPhoto Library>Data>2006>Roll 1 and so on

Sorry for the confusion :) Maybe this is really how it works with iPhoto 6? But it's so inconvenient (at least for me). If anyone out there knows how to fix this, please please help me. Thanks!

DO NOT modify or manipulate your iPhoto pictures and folders using Finder. You're only asking for trouble if you do that. Once you've imported pictures into iPhoto, manage them ONLY from within iPhoto. If you need to get pictures out of iPhoto, you can just drag and drop them to another application or folder from the iPhoto library.

i agree with you Patrick and i don't think this is bad at all. isn't it just great how less of a hassle it is for users not having to look for the picture file itself through Finder. i'm not that organized, so i just find it awesome how iPhoto does the organizing and storing of my pictures for me. i don't care where the actual files are located as long as i can easily find them and manage them through iPhoto.

Hi jackstone, take Patrick's advice. I don't know why you would want to manage and find your photos using Fnder anyway. The iPhoto Library is not meant for you to use. It's designed to be referenced by iPhoto, so let iPhoto do its job.

Think of iPhoto as Finder for your images. In fact, it works a million times better than Finder. It's an image managing application that's a browser, organizer and editor all rolled into one. You'll notice that it has spotlight built-in too.

For example, try dragging a thumbnail (single or multiple selections) into any folder (i.e. desktop or burn folder) or application (i.e. Mail, Word, Toast) and see what happens.

Once you realize that iPhoto makes life so much easier, you'll never visit the iPhoto Library using Finder ever again.

hey jackstone, if you want to organize your photos in finder while using the iphoto at the same time, try changing the preference of your iphoto: iphoto>preference>advance>importing; uncheck the copy files to iphoto library folder when adding to library. this way, iphoto will serve as a catalogue system for your photos(this can also be done in itunes). Next thing you do when you add your folder(with photos) to iphoto, you should drag and drop the folder directly in the source column (note: do not drag it in the library). the folder will now appear as a blue book. This way, there wont be duplicates of your photo file, just the ones you have in the finder.
Although in the iphoto library>data>2006 you will find the same folder name as the original folder that you have outside the iphoto library, but the contents are smaller files that is being used by iphoto for the thumbnail view of your photos.
But if you want something more convenient for photo catalogue, i use iview media pro, this is better and faster than iphoto, in terms of viewing and exporting photos.
    I hope this helps :)

in my previous (Windows) life, i got used to the method of organizing my photos using folders. is there a way to do the same in iPhoto 6? or, should i just start (and get used to) organizing photos using albums (instead of folders)?

what if i want my photos to be stored in my external hard drive (and not in my main hard drive while the iPhoto library is also located). is it possible to do that with iPhoto 6?

EDIT: kilter2 was able to answer my questions even before i asked them. thanks kilter2! my new question would be - is there a way to change the location of the iPhoto library (just like in iTunes where you can change the location of the iTunes music library)?

    yes, try this:
    To switch between photo libraries:
    Quit iPhoto.
Rename your current iPhoto Library folder in the Finder or move it to a new location on your hard disk, and then open iPhoto.
Tip: If you don't want to rename or move your current iPhoto Library folder, hold down the Option key while opening iPhoto.

    Click Choose Library.
Choose the library you want to display.
    Click Open.
The library appears in the Source list. Any photos you import will be added to this library.
    or:
To create a new photo library:
    Quit iPhoto.
Rename your current iPhoto Library folder in the Finder or move it to a new location on your hard disk.
    Open iPhoto.
    Click Create Library.
Type a name and choose a location for your new photo library.
    Click Save.
Your new, empty photo library appears in the iPhoto Source list. Any photos you import will be added to this library.

You can also use the free (donationware) iPhoto Buddy to easily switch between different iPhoto libraries.

When uploading pics to the net, i can just drag and drop? I didn't know that! That's the problem i'm having right now. Because before when uploading I browse through iPhoto Library in Finder to locate my pics.

Sure you can, most of the time at least :) Another way of doing it is to create a temporary folder on your desktop then drag all the pics from iPhoto directly into that folder, iPhoto will automatically make a copy of those images in the folder. After you're done uploading, just go ahead and trash the folder. You can also use iPhoto's File -> Export command if you want to resize a picture (or group of pictures) or change the format.

what I normally do is double click the image so iPhoto goes into edit mode. Then I resize the iPhoto window so the image appears in the size I want to capture. then I launch SnapNDrag and use the selection tool.

the only way i've been doing it is by dragging the pictures that i need from iPhoto and simply dropping them on my desktop then trashing them when i'm done..i should follow Patrick's advice though about putting them in a folder so my desktop won't be cluttered in case i forget to delete the pictures ;-P

    for resizing, i use EasyCrop

Can't find this option in my iPhoto. Or this is only available to iPhoto 6 users? I have iPhoto 5 and the only available tabs when click the Preferences are General, Appearance, Sharing and Keywords. Am I missing any steps here? Thanks:)
