Oslo, Norway - May 12, 2004 Opera Software today released 7.50 for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris. Opera 7.50 offers users hungry for a better Internet experience the latest advancements in Internet technologies, with the same engineering excellence and inventiveness that made its browser rendering so famous, now also offers a top-notch e-mailer, newsreader, RSS-compatible chat client, contact database, and much, much more. Still, with all the features, Opera remains the fastest, best coded, small browsing application in the world, weighing in at 3.5 MB.
A friend of mine created an Opera site. "With iOpera I want to show what can be done by using the advanced customization possibilities of Opera. And I want to encourage others to customize Opera to their needs and share their setup with the Opera user community. Feel free to use my files to further modify your Opera. The only thing I would like to ask you is to show a screenshot of your modifications in the forums threads mentioned below and -- if you like to -- to upload your setup to the my.opera.com server to make it available to others too." Check out iOpera.
I downloaded Opera 7.5 this morning and I agree that it is a bit faster than Safari and Firefox. However, when I surfed to http://www.philmug.org, all the text in all forums are "centered". Is there a way to fix this?
opera has always had formatting problems ever since their first mac version... youre better of using safari/camino/firefox and omniweb or even (gulp) ie... it also crashes a lot on dhtml/javascripted pages
I've long enjoyed using Opera, from the Windows version to those ported to Linux. It's nice to see this browser updated for Mac still with fast page loading, tabbed browsing (Opera was one of the first to implement this), and a small footprint. My main gripe after using 7.5 for a couple of hours is that the interface seems a bit cluttered. On a 12", screen real estate is a premium. Hopefully, some panel layout tweaking will solve that. Now, let's see if we can't fix the centered text problem.
Done Lemme know if it text still comes out centered. Wheee! I can use mouse gestures again! [Edited on 5-13-2004 by mgd]
Am looking at this page with Opera right now. Can't say I'm a fan of the browser, but Migs, you sure did fix the text centering problem. Congrats, dude  EDIT: Oooh, a feature I missed from my PC-surfing days ... Full screen browsing! [Edited on 5-13-2004 by vicicasas]
I found that feature quite cool as well! Safari will still be my main browser, but I'm shifting from Mozilla to Opera. I just noticed that Opera handles our Java-based application much more efficiently than Mozilla. EDIT: Another cool feature is the automatic reload of the pages. Our Java-based application is so secure that if there's no activity within a specified amount of time, the session expires. With the automatic reload, I can do something else while not worrying about the session expiration anymore! [Edited on 5-13-2004 by xineizer]
Kulnes! PhilMUG at Full Screen! @mgd: What's the cause of the centered text? I experience the same problems with my other favorite website (www.mapalad.org). And full-screen browsing ROCKS! [Edited on 5-13-2004 by berniej]
You can use the mouse to perform common commands like back, forward, close window, new window, etc. In Opera, check Help-Topics-Mouse.
Bernie, there was a misplaced CENTER tag. Migs, thanks for fixing this. (please share this with Mapalad, they have the same CENTER tag problem) re: the cluttered look, you can move things around in Opera. CTRL-click on any bar element and choose Customize Toolbar. The iOpera site I put above, also has premade bar configurations. [Edited on 5-13-2004 by joel]
The formatting problems you mentioned are caused by the web designers and not by Opera. Also, you might be referring to Opera 6 which does crash a lot. Try 7.50 and see if your favorite sites still crash. We do our best to release problem free Opera versions but sometimes, bugs do slip through. 7.50 is the best version yet. I hope you'll enjoy it.
Joel's right. Very simple really . Check out this post on xmbforum. There are few more cosmetic elements that need to be tweaked (a table in the user control panel and the bottom button on the top right).
Thanks for the tip joel! I just removed the personal toolbar and moved the panel to the right. I'm pretty happy with it now. Will continue to play around with customizing.
With the right themes and buttons, you can make Opera look like Firefox, Safari, or IE. Sometimes, even cosmetic changes can already make people feel more comfortable with Opera. Happy customizing!
There seems to be a bug in Opera 7.5. If you are on multiple tabs, and in one of the tabs you try to download/view a quicktime movie, and while the movie is playing or downloading, you click another tab, the last frame of the movie remains on the screen. EDIT: Hmmm... it doesn't seem to happen everytime... other times, it's fine. strange.. :wound: [Edited on 5-14-2004 by xineizer]
Yes, it is a bug but I think it is not a priority right now as the process you are describing is not a normal browsing behavior. (Why would you switch pages if you're watching something, diba?) But rest assured, the bug has been reported.
