a friend has just migrated and needs help on the least painful way to let appleworks open her mostly excel files.

likewise, she also has a sony micromv camera that refuses to be captured by either FCP or iMovie.

thanks a lot for any help.

Does, she absolutely have to use AppleWorks? Cuz if she can get a hold of MSOffice, then there would be no "pain" involved.t MSOffice documents can be opened natively in any platform that has MSOffice installed.

If you are unable to use MS Office you can also use NeoOffice. It's a free office suite that can open most MS Office documents.

You could try using DropDV to convert MPEG video from your MicroMV camcorder into a DV stream. After conversion you can then use your video in iMovie and FCP. There is a petition addressed to Sony to add Apple Macintosh support to their line of MicroMV camcorders. You might want to read it and sign the petition.

Is it safe to install NeoOffice to my PowerBook? Is it easy to use? Sorry for these questions, newbie e.

    Thanks!

Yep. Generally, everything in OSX is a lot safer as compared to windows because of the unix premise. Coupled with the fact that the core of OSX is a version of BSD... one of the best [e.g. secure] variants of unix out in the market.

Installing in a nix environment is worlds apart from Windoze since you don't have registry settings (and usually minimal to no dependencies) to worry about. And applications almost never intrude on user privilidges unless explicitly set (by you) to do so. So safe, would be qualitative yes.

When compared to windows however, it becomes an absolute "yes" :)

Furthermore, the apps you put in are pretty much self contained... and can be easily uninstalled by simply deleting related files you find.

So if you're a newbe from Windows, fear not. You're in good hands with O-S-X (with the metrobank tune hehehehe)

Oh and just in case, do not install Norton. It just so happens that it is an exception of whatever I said, and can seriously mess up your system. Baka kse sanay ka din sa mga antivirus, etc. ng windows. If you install NAV, it can probably do more damage than good (and is a pain in the proverbial to delete completely)
