Proteus is a multi-platform chat client, just like Adium. It used to be shareware, but now it's FREEWARE.

When you launch it though, you'll be given the options to enter a registration key, use the free trial or purchase the product. Select purchase and go through the eSellerate process, as if you'd be buying. Don't worry, it won't ask you for credit card details. It's just a process that's been built into the software, which the developers promise to remove in the next release.

    Enjoy!

Yes, since I've been using Adium since the start. Although yeah, I notice a few glitches here and there.

If Adium's duck is annoying you, then try Proteus. It's a bit more serious.

I've been using it, I can't tell yet which of the two is better.

proteus is ok, especially now that it's free. but i prefer adium's xtras and added custom features. i am not so sure but i think there is very limited customization (events, appearance, contact list, message box, etc.) with proteus. so, am staying with adium for the meantime.

I'm now loving Proteus. I like the chat skins as well. I think it's a way more elegant implementation than Adium. I don't miss that duck one bit.

I can't seem to run Proeteus. I'm using Adium but am trying out Proteus because Adium can't send files to Yahoo Messenger users. however, after mounting the dmg file, and dragging the app to the Applications folder, when I run it nothing happens. The icon appears on the dock then disappears just as fast. I tried right clicking it, then I went to show package contents and under Mac OS folder, ran it under terminal. Here's what it said:

Last login: Sun May 21 20:37:22 on ttyp1
    Welcome to Darwin!
    Chua-2:~ Chua$ /Applications/Proteus.app/Contents/MacOS/Proteus; exit
    Proteus(277,0xb8303100) malloc: *** vm_allocate(size=3221225472) failed (error code=3)
    Proteus(277,0xb8303100) malloc: *** error: can't allocate region
Proteus(277,0xb8303100) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug
    Bus error
    logout
    [Process completed]

I hope someone can help me. Thanks a lot!

Locate the file named com.alientechnology.Proteus.plist. You can Spotlight it or go directly to your user library ~/Library/Preferences.

Trash that file and relaunch Proteus. You'll need to setup all the accounts from scratch though.

There is no such file. I tried both, using spotlight and manually locating it. I just extracted the .dmg file, dragged the icon to the applications folder, then double clicked it from the applications folder.

are you in your User folder? It should be in Macintosh HD > Users > username > Library > Preferences.

Please delete the Proteus application, download it again and then drag into your Applications folder once more.

i don't know if i did a complete uninstall. I right clicked the app then selected Show Package Contents; deleted the contents; back; move to trash; empty trash.

I'm having the same problem .... it ran fine on my 12" PB but no longer seems to be working on my new MBP.

h.chua, are you on an Intel Mac as well? If so, that could be the root of the problem.
