I just want to share with you a feature in Word for Mac that is very useful if you are taking notes and taping a lecture or presentation at the same time, aka "transcribing". This was shared by Junior Tan of Apple Singapore when he visited us last Thursday. Open Word app, in the menu go to "view" and click "notebook layout" in the dropdown menu. Once there, you can type in your "notebook" and you can record at the same time by pressing the record button. I have been using Word in the Mac for three years now and I never realized that there is a feature such as this. Nap
I've been using it quite a while now to record all the meetings I attend. Once the entire meeting has been recorded, I can then ask a secretary to transcribe to minutes of the meeting. Definetely more high tech than taping the meeting. This feature is also invaluable to students who are allowed laptops in class.
life would have been easier for us if this was available when I was a med student. I envy the med students of today. They have all the gagets available to them. They can carry all their books in their PDAs. Do instant research for a case on their laptops. Thanks for sharing docnap.
it's really neat...especially useful when i do my research, the tab options really keep my notes organized. but i haven't tried the record function in class yet since i don't know if the mic can capture my profs' voice (some of them can really be soft). hope someone can give me feedback on this.
The reason pages doesn't have it is because Apple's software design philosophy is different. Instead of cramming many unrelated features into a product, it allows you to use individual products easily. Try using a separate audio recording program. Or a program that allows note taking while recording. You're likely to find freeware or shareware that does it.
Probably because they are trying to sell their other application, called OneNote. I was using OneNote during my TabletPC days and its ok. Looks similar to the Notebook view of Word for Mac but I think a bit more full featured. Im not certain if it has the record function though.
You got a point there. Problem is MS Office is pricey compared to iWorks so I feel relieved that at least Mac Office has more features compared to iWork AND Office for PC.
@paparazzi: It looks like a blank "vanilla" document that has three initial pages with a "header" that has the date and time. The three blank pages is for the three sections that is displayed by Word for Mac by default. I tried recording something with the document but the audio file did not go to my PC when I copied the document over.
According to Junior Tan, Word for Windows will coming up with this version soon. This just goes to show that even the Mac version of a Microsoft product is way ahead. If you save a file in the Mac and open it in a PC, you won't be able to able to play the audio as stated in the previous posts. Well, in time you can.. Nap
Been using this feature all the time since Office:mac 2004 came out, there is actually a button on the lower left corner of any open document window that will shift to notebook mode when you click it. A lot more convenient than going through the menu. This was one of Office 2004's much heralded features, I'm really quite surprised it was only 'discovered' today.
Ha ha ha. Come to think of it. I think somehow I was able to view a document in the notebook layout format in the past. I just did not know that one can record and make notes in real time. Well, sometimes the simplest of things has to be shown to us before it can become evident. Nap
great discovery you have! thanx for sharing, this would be of great help to me in my conventions. no need to bring along my recorder. Godbless!
