About 2 days ago, I tried to update my iPhone apps and when I entered my AOL password (I use my AOL account as my US iTunes acct) after being prompted, I got this message: You need to change your account to use an Apple ID. To continue using the iTunes Store, you must update your iTunes account by choosing a free Apple ID. I clicked on Continue and, as expected, it is asking me put in a US credit card among other things. Anybody else seeing this? Any way around this?
I tried updating the app direct from the iPhone but it's still not allowing me to connect. Only difference is that it's not asking me to create a new Apple ID.
I suppose it is because ITunes changed its download policy as stated below. "U.S. SALES ONLY Purchases or rentals (as applicable) from the iTunes Store are available to you only in the United States, its territories, and possessions, and are not available in any other location. You agree not to use or attempt to use the iTunes Store from outside of the available territory. Apple may use technologies to verify such compliance." In the past you could legally download iTunes music from anywhere by just having a credit card and a US address or a prepaid iTunes card. The new terms of sale changed that.
^ I just downloaded from my US account. & I'm in makati right now. Besides, isnt the US Sales Policy something that's been there ever since? I remember back in 2004 thinking that it was pointless to have a US account if I could only download while in the US. then somebody in macrumors told me that you can actually use the account anywhere in the world; so I opened a US account. The US address that I gave is my family's residence in LA.
Same thing happened to me. One way to get around it is to get someone to send you the redemption code from a US iTunes gift card, and enter that instead of your credit card details (there's an option for that; scroll down when you get to the credit card details screen) when it asks you for a US-based source of income. You'll need a US address, of course. Good luck.
True you still can download anywhere if you have an account with a US address but this is a violation of Apple's new download policy. And I quote "You agree not to use or attempt to use the iTunes Store from outside of the available territory. Apple may use technologies to verify such compliance." So greta8 and jason dv you just admitted to committing wire fraud. Hala, yan na FBI! ; )
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=674042&highlight=US+iTunes+Store+territory I think one reason why this language has to be "there" is for the eyes of the record labels/production outfits/content providers that Apple has agreements with in the various iTunes stores all over the world. Even though Apple has been lenient in enforcing it, if a label in a certain jurisdiction makes issue with this circumvention (or encroachment if you will), Apple can point to the particular provision in the ToS "restricting' the account holder's rights as their proof of compliance. Plus, Apple can always argue that there are legitimate account holders like expats, exchange students, tourists who might still want to access their US itunes store account while outside US territory that US itunes might unduly deprive of access if strict application of this policy is enforced. Note also in the thread that this policy has been there since the time of itunes Store's creation. nothing new really. although it is perhaps more prominent now. In fact, I dont think it's the US store that will complain since clearly it is deriving income from this. Most likely, if there's anyone who'll complain, it's the labels in the other jurisdictions whose markets are being encroached upon by the continued access to the US itunes store. perhaps when the RP itunes store starts selling music & video, then we'll start seeing stricter enforcement, but until then, expect lax application of the policy. besides, if the RP store had the same 'stock' as the iTunes stores in other jurisdictions, why even bother maintaining the foreign accounts? plus, I dont think what I did will qualify as wire fraud. I did open the account while I was in the US & I do pay real American currency whenever I top up my credit. & I haven't stolen anything let's just say i'm taking advantage of the situation
