I got a big big problem.. I'm using macbook with Mac OSX, yesterday I updated a firmware through software update. then after a while a black screen appeared telling me to hold down the power button to restart. when it went back, there's no login window, just a white background with a question mark folder blinking in the center of the screen. so I restart it again, and now I only get a white background and it won't start. what shall I do?? I tried inserting the MacOSX installer and doing the first aid repair, but I got an error message. I also need help on how I can back-up my files.. thanks guys.
for the backup, if you know another mac user, bring it to them and with a firewire cable boot your mac in Target disk mode by pressing "T" while booting. your Harddrive will appear in your friend's desktop. from there you can backup your files.
thanks wildcard, but that's also a problem.. I don't know any other mac user that could help me with that. If I bring it to iStudio or Powermac, will they help me with the back-up?
Most probably yes, but I don't know If they will charge you or not. They could also try reinstalling your OSX without any loss of data.
Well, as far as i know, applecare only covers hardware defects, I really don't know if if covers software related crashes and data backups. I suggest you call them up and inquire.
I already brought it to istudio in greenhills and it was diagnosed crashed hard disk.. :c too bad I don't have any back up of my files.. lost it all. Glad I bought applecare,it's now for replacement. can anyone help me how to use time machine?
@macsherry: Buy an external hard drive at least the same size of your internal hard drive. Plug it in to the USB/FW port. Turn on Time Machine. Leave it alone to do its work. Simple as that.
Time Machine, btw, is found the System Preference. You can also choose which folders that is not needed to be backed up... You can also put an icon of Time Machine in your Menu Bar for easier and more frequent back up..
