I've always pictured myself enjoying my mac gadgets on one of these beauties:

    Eames Lounge Chair

    Barcelona Chair

    Aeron Chair

Now this is what I call an office chair!

TJ, you and I will get along very well. I like all the above. I've sat on the Aeron chair on many occasion, and I can tell why it's so darn pricey! It's the perfect chair for working.

OMG! The perfect thread, don't get me started on chairs! Have been collecting chairs since 1998 concentrating on mid century modern design! have a set of Eames shell chairs and an Eames lounge chair that should be restored soon.

I believe the Aeron was designed by Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf and is actually locally available thru Herman Miller here, though you can get them cheaper from
e bay / i've seen them go for as 'little' as 500 USD.

You can add allsteels #19 to this list, Eames La Chaise, and Bertoia's diamond chair! arghhhh I can't stop!

toto, do you use the chairs in your photo shoots? years ago, jun de leon once gave me an antique wooden chair he used to use at his studio when looking at contacts and trannies. it was his fave chair that time, and he gave it to me in exchange for silver jewelries he liked so much! and speaking of chairs, where can we get a really good director's chair?

Hey! really depends but yup, have used a few in some shoots. I got mine ( a high director's chair) from area in powerplant a long time ago. I needed a high chair for my studio's make up area. They may have some still in stock or you can ask if they have them on sale at their warehouse over in pasig i think.

    replicas manufactured here!

i was just speaking to someone at a party last night who told me that replicas of these classics are manufactured here!

now if you are willing to forgo the cachet of owning an ORIGINAL and do not consider replicas as infringement on the designer's intellectual property these would be great buys at the prices i was informed of.

on hearsay, i am told that the eames' lounge chair, the plywood and the other one of fiberglass seat and metal wire tripod legs whose name escapes me now, the barcelona chair, and other classics are availble at a fraction of what one would pay for even the thai manufactured replicas of these. i will confirm the facts then announce the good news here. also, dimensione sells a arne jacobsen ant chair lookalike for a little more than P500 a piece.

i'd like to add to the list the Le Corbusier Confort 'experimental' line (club chair, sofa, mini sofa), Eames' plywood chair, Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona daybed, and a footstool to match the Barcelona chair, Breuer's Wassily chair. Let's not even get into other forms of funiture here...

this group never stops to amaze me! i guess macs bring a certain kind of people together, dont they? could it be the macs penchant for good design both inside and out attracting people who appreciate the same not only in their computers but in all things as well? damn, this should be called the phillippine good life group...

cubix, does that mean you hava an Aeron? I'm jealous!
But I'm more jealous of Toto!
I'm a chair freak, but just vicariously. I still have to get my hands on one of these babies. In the mean time, I just pore over them and other chairs in books and magazines. Check out "1000 Chairs" by Taschen Books. Its like a field guide for spotting chairs. I also like finding these chairs in TVs and movies. You see Aerons all over the place. Bast may ad agency scene or hit-tech lab like CSI. You see an Eames Lounge on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy at the end when they do their critique.

ULTRATRAMP! Text me once you get word on those replicas!

    Herman Miller Dealers in RP

For the well-off among us who just gotta sit on the Aeron Chair while they surf on their Macs, here are the listed dealers of Herman Miller in the Philippines, as shown on its website:

I saw the Aeron (or something that looks like it) at Ergo in the 4th floor of Megamall. Very very pricey. I think its about P60-75K. Somebody posted it kasi at the the earlier PhilMug site so I went off to look for one. Too bad, its too expensive.

Its the chair used by Hugh's character in the movie Swordfish, right?

Wow, and I thought my mom was the only person on earth with a chair fetish! haha  We've got an Eames Lounge chair in our den. I don't find it too comfy though. I'd pick my Aeron over the Eames any day! Yes, the Aeron is the perfect chair for surfing the net; powerbook in lap, legs propped up. :)

TJ, Yes thats what I use for office desk at home. Speaking of nice chairs. There's a nice transparent plastic chair in Dimension. Looks pretty neat and a nice match for Imac's sleek modern design.

Ya, i visited Herman Miller's office / showroom / warehouse over at citiland about two years ago with the hopes of getting this thing restored, it's a really tiny office in the back corner of that buillding. Really sad considering the stuff they sell out of there. If you really want one it will be chaeper to get in in HK, Taiwan or Singapore, or even the States. There's really something screwed up about the prices and official distributors over here!

Even Area store, who is the distributor of Kartell, i called them for a quote on a dining table and they took about 1 month to get back to me on it's price. i ended up just asking for a quote thru their website.

Plese let me know about those local manufacturers, would love to see what they got! :)

Was actually offered a complete dining set of 4 saarinen tulip chairs and a table , all original a year ago and was about to reserve na but the guy who sourced it had some utang to some architect and ended up giving them away!

Will post some pics of some of these things that were being sold, there was wvwn a set of 2 knoll lounge chairs in brown (orig fabric)! if i had the cash back then, would have gotten them too!

    Hi Mike,

Where did you get the chairs? I wonder if they have a dealer here.

Oh boy. It looks like some people here share my obsession with chairs.

I can talk endlessly about chairs for days (warning: semi-long post). As an architect, I regard chairs as architecture in miniature. They serve a function and are a work of art in themselves. If only I could, I'd have a wall of each of my favorite chairs in my apartment.

Here are some photos of chairs I used for a recent project:

The guest chairs are Mies van der Rohe's iconic Tubular Steel Cantilever chairs. If you can believe it, these were designed in 1929. The executive chair is the immensely successful Aeron chair from Herman Miller. This one is in a titanium finish to match the PowerBook at the rear console.

In the same office is a lounge that features Arne Jacobsen's gorgeous Swan chairs. That's a Danish Snowball lamp hanging there, but lamps are another obsession and another thread altogether. :)

The conference room uses my personal favorite, Charles and Ray Eames' Aluminum Group chair. These are by Vitra and utilize a mesh fabric that allows the user's skin to breathe.

Speaking of Vitra, this Swiss furniture company has an incredible chair museum in Basel, Switzerland. It's in a building designed by the avant garde architect Zaha Hadid.

Check it out here. and here.

Do let me know if you find someone who'll make reproductions here. And don't worry, it's not illegal. The rule is, 25 years after a chair is first designed and produced, the copyright expires so anyone can reproduce it after that. Of course there are certain manufacturers that are said to be 'official reproductions'. These are appointed by the designer's foundations and are usually the most faithful to the original specifications. An example would be Cassina who produce Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright pieces with their signatures inscribed on them.

I'll post again later some chairs that I have yet to hunt down...

The chairs are good if you can maintain it's nice leather finish, or keep it away from stain. If ever you have any of those nice chairs and you wanna restore them, I would suggest you try my company's other product - Teflon protected leather and Teflon protected upholstery fabric. And no, you wont slip if you sit on them, and no, you cant cook on your chairs. he he he.

Check out these links from our company
