Just remember to drop the package inside postal box before entering the immigration, there is no way to drop it after immigration

Not an app, but a website, hyperdia.com. It's supposed to have an app for IOS but it's not available in the Philippines store. It also has an android app. It gives you the train schedules, what train to take from station to station, time of departure and arrival from your starting point and destination, transfer time, and even the platform where your train arrives. I found it very useful in planning my day.

Don't forget to drop by Hakata Shinkansen Station to shop for your food pasalubong. They have a huge area (I'm not kidding) where MOST of Japan's "pasalubong" food (those treats that are packed intricately and very delicious to add) are represented.

Train system is not as developed as Tokyo but the plus side is that you can take a bus from the airport (free) to the nearest subway station and pay regular subway fares when going to the city. Much cheaper than taking Narita Express/Skyliner in Tokyo.

We used flytpack wifi ( https://flytpack.com/wifi ) on our May trip, same as you we landed in Tokyo and departed from Osaka. Flytpack will deliver the pocket wifi/powerbank to your house a few days before your trip and a courier will pick it up when you get back.

I think it was unlimited because at one point the usage meter reported 2+gb consumed in one day but I could still connect. Apple Maps and Google Maps were lifesavers.

Hands down, the best travel app available: Citymapper. I used this app in Japan and Korea and I must say it is a must have.

Thanks for this tip. Will try this app next time and compare it with google map as I always used just the google map as my nav/transport app.

What is a reasonable hotel rate (price per night) in Tokyo and Osaka? P7k per night?

Apparently, the embassy is now very strict in issuing visas. A friend only got a single entry, 3 mos visa and is really pissed about it!

Is it his first time? If it is that's common - they usually give multiple entry after he uses the single entry

Oh no, really? Got ours 2 months ago, 3rd trip in 3 years. First two, we only got single entries, but last April, we were given 5 years.

First timers are issued single entry most of the time unless you want multiple entry from the get-go which you would need to submit additional docs and written explanation on why you'd want it.
