Here's an interesting and essential article by Dan Frakes at MacFixIt. It explains the troubleshooting steps every Mac user should know, as well as the troubleshooting tool AppleJack, which can be a lifesaver. I strongly recommend that everyone download and install this application (make sure to print out the readme too) and bookmark the MacFixIt page as well.
Went to the applejack source forge site but clicking on the download link brought no response. Tried this on both a dsl and dial-up account. The versiontracker site yielded a faster result. (just google applejack)
Tried AppleJack on a MacBook Pro. It went on an endless loop when I tried Reparing Permissions. I tried several times, but failed in all attempts. Had no problems with a PowerBook G4 1Ghz 12". This is version 1.4.2 by the way. I hope the fix would come soon enough.
Really? How come when I ran Repair Disk, it did run and it ran smoothly. It is with the permissions repair that it went haywire. I think the issue is not whether it is Universal Binary or not. Read more here.
used applejack yesterday. the weird thing about it is my OS went back to 10.4.2! also, the microsoft office update was lost. i had to update all over again. what went wrong?
Just to update this thread, AppleJack works for both PPC and Intel Macs. But read the MacFixit article linked in the first post to give you a background on what AppleJack does.
Downloaded it. As I understood it, it wouldn't do any harm to a normally functioning computer without any problems. So I tried it, just for the heck of it. Cool app - easy to setup and use. I think this can be used as part of a maintenance process....
Definitely.. i never fail to run AppleJack after installing system updates.. haven't encountered issues with it, or after running it..
i'm having problems with my applejack after i loaded my leopard OS. after booting in single user mode (com+S) i'd type the usual command applejack auto restart... i always get this message you're not the authorized root user. applejack must quit. any idea how to fix it? i only have one account in my macbook, and i don't see any reason why i'm not the "authorized root user?"
