  3. My barok suggestion:

    1. First Google WireTap.sit. You will need this free OS X utility. It should be the second hit when you type "WireTap.sit" in Google search.

    2. Ok, install WireTap. Now hit record and then play the file you want to sound record. Hit stop when done.

For best results have the source file turned on loud. This works only on OS X. If you want to try something fancy, the beta for Sound Studio is free (another thing you need Google to find).

    Yeah I hope this helps.

And oh yeah, this makes .aiff files from anything that makes sounds on OS X. iTunes will easily play the .aiff files ( including converting them to AAC, MP3, & Apple Lossless).

You can also do it like I do (the hard way). I feel that the method below will give you the best results. Near-perfect conversion. Here goes:

1.) Install ffmpegX and MacTheRipper (both are free).

2.) Play the DVDs using Apple DVD Player and list down the Title/Chapter combos you want to convert to MP3s by doing the ff:
    - while playing the track you want, click on "Title" on the Controller (the one besides "Chapter" on the display, not the button) twice until you see something like 2/4. That's the title no. (title 2 of 4).
    - click on "Chapter" twice until you see something like 5/15. That's the chapter no.

3.) Fire up MacTheRipper and click on "Mode". Choose "Title - Chapter Extraction". From the drop-down menus, select the relevant title and chapter (SChpt = starting chapter, EChpt = ending chapter). Tip: rip one chapter at a time (one chapter usually equals one song). Rip the sucker by clicking on "Go! ". You'll end up with a folder like "LIVE_AT_THE_BUDOKAN Title 2 (Ch5 - Ch5)" with a VIDEO_TS folder within. Inside the VIDEO_TS folder, you'll have a file named something like "LIVE_AT_THE_BUDOKAN Title 2 (Ch5 - Ch5).VOB". This is the file you need to convert to MP3.

4.) To convert to MP3, fire up ffmpegX. Open the VOB file and choose the save location (as well as the final output's filename) by clicking on "Save As... ". Under the "Summary" tab, choose "Movie audio to mp3" as the Target Format.

5.) Under the "Audio" tab, you can choose which audio bitrate to use (usally 256Kbps or 192Kbps for me) as well as the sampling rate. The sampling rate should usually be 44100 Hz. Channels should be Stereo. Mode usually CBR. Audio Track should be "1".

6.) Before encoding, test by clicking on the "Filter" tab and click on "Preview" (bottom right). If you don't get any sound, choose another no. for the Audio Track (see no. 5 above) until you get sound.

7.) Click on "Encode". Wait for the process to finish. Then enjoy. :)

    Re: Musical DVD's to iTunes?

Yup. Easy way: Audio Hijack/Hijack Pro or WireTap Pro; hard way: ffmpegX + VCDGearX + QuickTime Pro/iTunes.

If you're a stickler for quality, you wanna go the hard route. :) If you're lucky, the whole concert is already broken down into a number of .dat files (one .dat file = one track). If that's the case, you only need to transcode, no need to trim the resulting file into separate tracks.

Here's what you need to do:

    1.) Install ffmpegX and VCDGearX.

2.) Convert the .dat files from the VCD (located inside the MPEGAV folder) to .mpeg using VCDGearX. Conversion = dat2mpg. Check the following options: Fix broken MPEG blocks... and Don't add initial sequence...

3.) Fire up ffmpegX and convert the resulting .mpeg files to MP3s by using the "Movie audio to mp3" Quick Preset. Go to the "Audio" tab to set the desired bitrate, sampling rate (should usually be 44100 Hz), etc.

    Good luck! :)
