Is it safe to delete the applications inside the Mobile Applications folder? I have multiple apps inside the folder with size 700MB on disk. I am not sure if it has something to do with iTunes Store account as I only have two - Philippines for applications and US for songs and videos. See image below:
I noticed this too. I went ahead and deleted all instances of an app EXCEPT for the one with the highest number (if you have Remote.ipa to Remote4.ipa, just keep Remote 4.ipa). I don't know why iTunes doesn't do this automatically, it's something they need to fix. Deleting the other instances of an app also solved my iTunes problem where it shows that I have an app update available but when I click to check for updates I'm told that all my apps are up to date. Better move the apps out to a temporary folder first, then sync your iPod/iPhone and see if everything is still okay. Once you've confirmed that everything is still the way it's supposed to be, you can go ahead and actually trash all the old versions.
That happens if you have apps in your iPod or iPhone but you unselected those apps in iTunes prior to syncing. What iTunes does is it copies the program again from your handheld to your Mobile Applications folder. I think it assumes that you downloaded those apps directly from the Apps Store application in your iPhone or iPod so it backs them up to your Mac when you do a sync.
Hmmm, I've never unselected any apps in iTunes, everything is in their default settings. I do update apps from both the touch and iTunes though (whichever I'm using when I notice the update notification), maybe that has something to do with it.
You may be on to something here, PatrickGaerlan. I noticed that only those apps that I updated had these multiple file names.
I just checked, the multiple files is indeed caused by updates. I received one update today and the application had a duplicate.
hi antz you can follow patrick's suggestion but just to be sure you are deleting the correct file, go to iTunes appstore application then right click on the app then show in finder.. Take a look at my screenshot attached, the labyrinth thats on my appstore is the LE 1.ipa version so I deleted labyrith LE.ipa.. I may be wrong but on my end last.fm and labyrinth doesnt have an updates yet since i installed it.
@skinhead.. yes, deleted all dups already, i would rather use "Get Info" as it will show the file name and I just delete the dups in finder. It may sound tedious but I just want to be sure that I am deleting the right file. I have also noticed that the 700MB was also removed both from my Touch and iPhone. Easier to check the updated file eg, Backgammon 3.ipa
when you click 'Show in Finder', the file highlighted in the Finder window that opens is the version of the app that you selected in iTunes. I did this to delete the duplicates. By the way, thanks for finding this antz88c.
This is an essential tip. You need to do this to make sure that you know which instance is the latest version because the highest numbered one will not always be the latest version (if you keep SampleApp 4.ipa as the latest version, then the next update that you download will probably be named SampleApp.ipa).
This thread is more than 6 years old and the current iTunes still has this. I just noticed now that I have multiple versions of the same application in my iTunes Library. Any good logic why this is happening? I'm under the assumption that the latest update should overwrite the version in the Mobile Applications folder but that seems not to be the case I can save some space if I delete the duplicates but I'm worried to remove the correct files Should I just leave it as it is?
