I just got an HP iPaq h6315 and am now considering getting either Missing Sync or Pocket Mac for syncing purposes with my iMac G5. I would like to get some opinions or input from those who've used either one of them or even better yet, from people who've had experience using both. I already did a search, and pretty much most of the results I got simply suggested to get either Missing Sync or Pocket Mac if someone plans on syncing a Pocket PC device with a Mac. I'm hoping to get more important info like stability or perhaps developer support apart from this. TIA
i'm using Missing Sync... look at these threads for more info http://www.philmug.ph/viewthread.php?tid=1905 http://www.philmug.ph/viewthread.php?tid=4743 http://www.philmug.ph/viewthread.php?tid=971 good luck  [Edited on 1-15-2005 by Maverick]
Maverick, I got to read those threads while doing my search. Thanks, just the same. Haven't you encountered any stability problems with Missing Sync, like crashes or the app completely hanging on you? And does it really perform all tasks without any major hitch? I read some reviews of both products on version tracker and they simply made me more confused. There were as many people who were short of ecstatic with the PocketMac as there were who simply found the app horrible. Same goes for Missing Sync. I was hoping that reviews or verdict would sway either way so I can at least have an idea about what the general concensus is on both applications. [Edited on 1-16-2005 by bacon]
i've never tried pocket mac so I can't really say much other than what i've read. more people i know or have talked to liked missing sync more. on another note, i haven't had any issues what so ever with this app. no crashing, no hanging, no nothing. i don't know about other experiences from other people, but i love it.
If you could get PocketMac, go for that. I also use Missing Sync just like Maverick but I find the company slow in terms of upgrades. It doesn't sync with the mail app and iCal is just too *ugh* to use. I find it useless to synchronize if I'm just after to transfer my contacts list. And Missing sync is charrging for their version 4 when I'm unhappy with their previous version. They should give unsatisfied customers the free upgrade. I haven't tried pocket mac but if it syncs with entourage, I'm sold! Problem with pocket mac is that they don't accept Philippine credit cards.
Maverick, Thanks for the help. Your input's appreciated. jorweeck, Ey, same jorweeck from HCP, right? Thanks for the reply as well. I'm just as intrigued with PocketMac Pro. On paper, it should actually outperform Missing Sync. And, with the ongoing discount, its price has gone down right smack into Missing Sync's territory. However, all the negative reviews in the different websites does make me feel a little leery about purchasing this app outright. I really wish there's someone here in Philmug who's had the chance to use this app whom I can get some feedback from.
I go missing sync. I've used both. PocketMac's strength is that it can sync to Entourage, but when I used it, whenever I edit an entry and resync, it does NOT alter the entries in question. Missing sync is doing better now but I'm limited to the built-in apps - but I'm thinking that with the release of Tiger, there's sure to be widget access for the addressbook and calendar, which is a better option than firing up entourage... unless of course entourage makes widgets for it too. But in a nutshell, Missingsync, though limited in features, seems to be syncing better than PocketMac. I mean what's the use of using a feature-filled software if it can't do the simplest thing right... right? [Edited on 1-16-2005 by nargalzius]
nargalzius, Ey, thanks for the reply! That's real valuable info you just gave me there. At this point, I'm leaning towards getting Missing Sync. Seems like it's just a more stable app at the moment compared to Pocket Mac Pro. Aside from this it'll be quite inconvenient for me to borrow somebody else's US billed credit card jost to get Pocket mac Pro. By the way, don't you guys encounter any problems regarding downloading and installing applications through Missing Sync?
@bacon the applications/programs should be in .cab format. If the app only installs via .exe file, you're out of luck. Best bet is to have a winbox desktop and sync it there. It's sad that neither of the two actually performs really well.
Oh my, that means I'll probably have to install apps using my old Windows laptop or the computers in the office. I really wish both developers continue improvement efforts with their products.
Since I like putting the installer .CABs on SD cards (that way if i hard reset away from my computer, I can still install the apps I use) All my important data is on SD too, so a wiped pocketpc is no problem. Anyways, what I do to get all the CAB files, is to obviously download CAB versions if available, now if it's in EXE file, there's still hope. What you do is install the app, then before you "ok" it to install on your device (in the ActiveSync dialog, quickly look for the folder in the activesync folder in "program files" more often than not, the CAB(s) needed are will be found in a new folder (of the apps name) inside the activesync folder. If it's not, just search for it. Bottomline is, that EVERYTHING that installs to the pocketpc is a cab file, so when installing in your desktop - at some point, there are SURE to be instances of the CABs you need somewhere in the system (unless the installer erases it from the desktop after install, which I doubt, but then that's why i told you to search for them BEFORE you ok the install to your pocketpc AS dialog hehehe) There are cases that it's a standalone .exe i've experience some of those... you'll know if you can't run in on your desktop. Just make sure it ain't a virus hehehe. So given that you now know how to get CABs from ANY install, and having those rare exe files aren't a problem since you can just dump em via your mounted device on your mac. hi bacon. i planned on purchasing PocketMac Pro, but their site has blocked Philippines buyers from buying their product. So i settled for Missing Sync. Everyone has mentioned everything you need to know about Missing Sync, but at the end of the day, you'd still be better of syncing your PPC with a PC.
where to buy hey guys. does any computer shop here the philippines sell missing sync for pocket pc and/or pocket mac pro? or can it be bought just through the internet? how long do you think the deliver will be? thanks
You can download it here. Sometimes, just typing the Application and doing a google search would do the trick.
PocketPC with Mac Please help... I was able to read a little about PocketMac Backup. It said in the article that I will be able to sync/backup/restore my PPC with Mac My ppc just recently crashed. i have a backup in my windows-based pc named "backup.stg". The problem is, i can't sync my ppc on that computer (long story). Anyway, I copied the said file on my Mac thinking that I could restore it using PocketMac Backup. Is this even possible?
Re: PocketPC with Mac I don't think so. Your best bet would be to restore the data on your PocketPC using a Windows machine then once your PocketPC is back to good health sync it with your Mac. I use an O2 with Missing Sync, which IMHO is better than PocketMac.
Re: PocketPC with Mac i dunno which one to get...misssing sync or pocketmac....trying out both apps... my question is how to install apps using missing sync....most of the install apps are in exe format
Re: PocketPC with Mac hi doc.. maybe this old thread could help: http://www.philmug.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=4527
Re: PocketPC with Mac thanks! thats what i have been doing at the moment....i install apps via windows and sync my contact, calendar and itunes via missing sync...haaaay
