hi there guys, i had this question. why does if i save my microsoft office files sometimes cannot be opened on windows microsoft office when i transferred it from my mac to windows? when i copy it to my pc, the traditional icon of microsoft office does not appear but a file system on windows then when i saved it to my pc, it saves to another filename. my friends complained to me that the files i send to them cannot be opened, while on the other way around, i save it on my mac under office for mac. is this normal? note that i usually save my microsoft office files on 1997-2004 version (.doc). thanks!

Maybe because the 'Append file extension' when you save is unchecked like this:

It should be checked, like this:

Windows is very particular with extensions. So without the proper extensions, the file will appear as a blank icon and is not readable. Try adding .doc to the filename and it will be opened in Windows.

if you are using office for mac 2008, if i remember it right, the default is to save it in docx (windows 7) thus the need to check the file extension. but also there are compatibility problems with earlier versions of ms office installed in old PCs

Make sure the file extension is .doc and not .docx.

it is normal if they are using old PCs and old versions of office. you would notice if you are saving the file in your usb there are 2 files, the main file and another with just 1k i think. that is the file that makes it compatible.

Here's a link that discusses compatibility packs, add-ons and viewers for users of older versions of MS products--which they can use to view files created from newer versions.

    Hope it helps.

You can't just copy-and-paste Office from one mac to another. You need to install the program properly, which means you'll need the installer disc.

If you have the Office installer disc, make sure it is not a single license disc. You won't be able to run Office if it has been previously installed on another mac.
