Hi, i have this problem wherein my macbook's drive won't take in cds. Its just stuck like halfway or something. Is this a minor problem which can be repaired without replacing the drive?

i think its already a mechanism problem, it needs replacement.

Thanks! Any idea how much would replacing it entail me?

@superdroo, I'm presuming you're already out of warranty?

if this is already out of warranty, you might want to consider external dvd drive as a cheaper alternative.

    Re: Superdrive problem

I noticed that the superdrives in the Macbooks easily get busted. I used to have 2 macbooks wherein the superdrives are faulty.

I'd suggest you get an external slim dvdrw drive instead as its way cheaper than having the internal one replaced.

@madmax168, it's not just the MacBooks, I think slot-loading drives in general are less reliable. I've had problems with the Superdrives of a 12" PowerBook and a first-gen MacBook. Also needed to claim warranty on the combo-drive of a first-gen Mac mini. Slot-loading drives look a lot cleaner, but I really think they're more problematic than the tray-loading variety.

yes, its out of warranty, sadly. i guess i'll opt for an external drive then, shocked at the price for the superdrive at the link above..

yep slot-loading optical drives are less reliable than their tray-loading counterparts mainly because they're prone to mechanism problems/failure aside from the lens failure. laptop tray-loading optical drives rarely have problems with loading discs since its mechanism is simpler - less moving parts to insert/eject a disc.. but slot-loading drives are way cooler!

^ Not just the slot-loading, tray-loading as well are a-pain-in-the-a**. I have used G4, G5, later models and my very own iMac7,1 that conked-out superdrives in a matter of a year (±). I believe that these brands (mostly pioneer and m a t s h i t a ) are some kind of sub-standard. I'm using an external Samsung slim-slot-loading right now which I bought for less than ₱4k over a year ago and its doing well.

    Re: Superdrive problem

By far, the least reliable part of every Mac I've ever owned has been the optical drive. At least claiming warranty on them is super easy.

@superdroo, you can get a slim DVD burner from V-Mall for around P2k-P3k. I'm very happy with LiteOn eSAU208 I bought a couple of months ago. Even though my MBP's Superdrive works, I prefer to burn with the LiteOn because I find it more reliable.

I'm getting the same error when I try to burn a dual-layer DVD using my MBP's Superdrive. Will have it checked at Digital Hub.

    Re: macbook's drive ejecting everything

    1. mechanism problem - it immediately ejects any discs inserted
    2. lens problem - it tries to read the disc first but will fail and eventually ejects the disc

these are common problems with slot-loading optical drives... solution is replacement.
