To fix the boot loop, I tried the following:
    • Restoring the OS by booting from the recovery partition - it didn't work since I had only 15% free space on my drive.
    • Tried manually freeing space from the command line while booted in the recovery partition - I managed to free almost 50% of the HD space but it still didn't work. It might be because of a corrupted download or something.
    • Booted to my Carbon Copy Cloner backup disk and cloned back to the internal HD. The mac kept being restarted when I tried to directly clone to the internal HD due to permission issues when overwriting some files. I had to reformat the drive to APFS, guid partition map first. It took 6 hours to restore 875 GB of data.
    • I was now able to boot to the internal HD again.
    • Freed up a lot of space this time.
    • Downloaded the Catalina installer and also made a copy for backup.
    • Installation took like 1.5 hours. This time, it was a success.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. I have experienced similar issues with other OSX upgrades before and its not fun. Normally the system should be smart enough to detect that there is not enough space and abort the installation. What you experience has got to be a bug.

Been reading fb groups and forums like Macrumors and the rate of issues for Catalina seems to be higher than your usual MacOS upgrade. For those who haven't yet, I suggest waiting for a few months for the bug fixes to come out before updating to Catalina.

Any suggestion how to access the local files from the iPad (i.e. those that are directly stored in 'Files'?)

Installing it now on my macbook air. Downloading took over an hour, installation took another hour. It’s been stuck on “setting up your mac” for almost an hour.

Anyone here know an extension for our beloved browser (Safari 13) that will reload tabs?

Have you tried to restart macOS or kill/restart Finder?

Great! I thought Catalina could be installed only on MBP's dated 2012 or later. How were you able to do it with your MBP 2009?

Restarting the Mac didn't resolve the issue but I found an easy fix by pressing the Option + Command + D keyboard shortcut.
