The next version of macOS was previewed last Monday at the WWDC 2019 Keynote. What’s features are you most excited about? Personally, I like that I can integrate my iPad as an extended display, more watch integration, and new music app.

Anyone figured out how to enable Sidecar on a system running Catalina and an Ipad 6th Gen running IpadOS? Could not figure it out last night. From my understanding the ipad should show as an available airplay device in the Airplay Icon on the menu bar. But my ipad cannot seem to be detected whether it be connected via cable or on the same wifi connection as my macbook pro.

Other than that preview builds of Catalina and IpadOS installed without any issues so far.

Is your mac on the list?

"As it turns out, Sidecar is limited to many of Apple's newer Macs, and the devices listed below will be able to use it.

Yup I just saw that list! I have a 2012 i7 Macbook Pro that is still humming along Catalina Beta nicely.

I even tried the terminal command to enable the system preference icon for Sidecar to appear.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/bx3eet/sidecar_support_on_older_macs/

It initiates but then exits into an error. :( I hope they enable Sidecar for older macs when Catalina is released.

Maybe because it’s still in beta

These Mac OS names make me learn more of California. Never knew that this Catalina is an island off the coast of LA.

mm...it is the “Tagaytay” of Angelenos, a place to decompress away from LA...... Love that little island.

    To refresh:

Reminder: 32-bit apps will not work in Catalina.

If you use your computer as your main work machine, hold off on the update. You're bound to run into a random forgotten app you use every once in a while that's no longer supported.

To see what's still 32-bit on your mac, go to:

Apple icon > About this mac > system report > applications > then click the 64-bit column to sort. No will be 32-bit apps.

Your mac does not support the sidecar feature.

Only these Macs can support the SideCar feature of macOS Catalina...
    • Late 2015 iMac or newer
    • Mid 2016 MacBook Pro or newer
    • Late 2018 Mac mini or newer
    • Late 2018 MacBook Air or newer
    • Early 2016 MacBook or newer
    • 2019 Mac Pro
    • 2017 iMac Pro

This can be a workaround for those Macs that do not support Sidecar for macOS Catalina.

In order to try and enable Sidecar on your Mac if it isn’t on the list, follow these steps:
    1. Connect your iPad to your Mac with a cable
    2. Open Terminal from your macOS Catalina computer
    3. Type “defaults write com.apple.sidecar.display AllowAllDevices -bool true; defaults write com.apple.sidecar.display hasShownPref -bool true; open /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Sidecar.prefPane” into Terminal (without the quotes)
    4. Press Enter
    5. Enter your password if you are prompted
Once you have input that line of commands into Terminal, your System Preferences opens up. From there, if it worked, you see a new option next to Displays called ‘Sidecar’ and you too can enjoy the fun.

macOS Catalina’s best feature is that it will allow you to get a new mac since some of the new features are not supported by your old mac. It gives you the drive and inspiration to aspire for more and the ability to find funds in fulfilling your profound desire for a new mac.

    ;) Happy download muggers!

macOS Catalina is now available for download but I'll wait until the appropriate drivers are released for my attached devices that I use for work.

Had this issue on my 2019 MBP, took over an hour to download, but the mid-2014 MBP took barely half an hour on the same connection (upgraded them one after the other)

Hah. Won’t lie, I felt left out after finding out that Sidecar won’t be supported on my mid-2014 MBP which is otherwise still serving me well. Helped a lot in deciding whether to get a new machine or wait.
