Mac and Yahoo Messenger?

Discussion in 'OS X and OS X Apps' started by carlo ledesma, Mar 13, 2005.

  1. Just a question to YM users out there. How safe are we using YM with Mac? Any chance some virus could leak in while we're logged on? I'm asking this because my previous G3 clam iBook, which ran OS9, seemed to never be the same after installing and using YM. It would hang, crash, till eventually it just shut down and never went on again. Just wondering if anyone out there can explain that.

I'm now using a Powerbook and is there any chance of YM (or iChat na rin) doing the same damage? I'm based far far away from most of my friends and contacts and YM seems to be the easiest way to keep in touch with them. I wish I could iChat but sadly they're all Neanderthal PC users. :p

  2. As yet (knock on wood), there are no known exploits for IM on MacOS X (whereas there are LOTS of exploits for MSN Messenger on Windows).

You have lots of third-party options for text IM on OS X, including Proteus ($), Fire (free), and Adium (free), all multi-protocol IM clients that support connections with AIM, MSN, YM, Jabbber, Gadu-Gadu, ICQ, etc.. If your PC-using friends have AIM, you can also use iChat to stay in touch with them. And don't forget Skype, which will let you make free VOIP phone calls to a PC from your Mac...

Dunno what happened with your OS9 clamshell iBook, perhaps it was just mere coincidence that it died after you started using YM on it...

I've been using YM and iChat for over a year now and there has been no ill effect on my machine. Sometimes having 2 IM clients open can be a bit cumbersome (so many windows). I use Adium to integrate my iChat and YM accounts and contacts so I have only 1 IM client active. Unfortunately, some features of YM and iChat are not supported by Adium.

I've been using YM with no problem. However, I wish YM will upgrade the features of their Mac version. It is a great way to get in touch with friends, family and clients. Of course, my favorite way of chatting nowadays is thru iChat!

adium is actually cooler in terms of the emoticons :) haha you can see the animated and newer emoticons on adium, whereas on YM for mac it comes out raw.

I use Proteus for Yahoo, MSN, and ICQ (I still use iChat for AIM). It integrates really well with the Address Book. I liked it enough to buy it :)

Yeah I agree with Dominique, YM for Mac is not as full featured as its' PC counterpart. I have been using mine since day one with no problems so far. I also use Adium which like superstarcrisse said allows you to see the animated icons, no problem with that as well.

Cool! Let me try it out. I just feel cheated sometimes with YM. All of my PC friends seem to be enjoying the new YM and when they ask me if I have audibles, I have to say that I don't have audibles since I use a Mac. Ouch! I'll let you guys know how it goes! So far i've tried and am currently using Fire. The first versions of Fire were crappy but now it seems so much better!

ive been using ym, ichat, skype and no problems whatsoever. there are times that i'm using all three of them at the same time. Ym since most of my friends who are into pc's are using ym. skype since ym for mac doesnt have the voip yet. ichat for mac user friend and for htose who have an aim account.

Usually i use ichat for voip or videochat but there are times that the lines get choppy so i use skype. For those without i chat or aim, i use skype for the voip , then we use ym to view each other thru the webcam.

if your pc friends download aim and get an aim account then you can use ichat for voip or videochat. I think that's the easiest... but in mycase, since most of my friends are using ym e mahihirapan pako to make then use aim... so i'm the one adjusting to them.

I agree, the YM version for Mac needs some upgrading. When I'm chatting with my friends on YM, I feel like I'm the odd person out.

  14. Many thanks! Will YM for now and will hook up to iChat once I make more Mac friends. :p

YM on Mac seems pretty lame compared to YM on the PC.

Which alternatives would you recommend for accessing YM on the Mac?
