IMO warranty should still be valid, im pretty sure laser etching has nothing to do if you laser etch your top case and a week after you got a busted Logic board or a broken superdrive or maybe a dead power adapter!.. if thats a LCD problem then maybe.
could you just walk-in and have something laser etched? i'm planning to hae my ipod etched.. would you know if the rounded edges could also be etched? or is it only applicable to the face?
It surely would put a personal touch to the mac. For those who may want to sell the unit for an upgrade, better have it unisex tough The etching could help track down the unit or at least warn a potential buyer if it gets stolen
Thanks, Ian Gabinete and Lakan for the posts. Very informative feedback on local engraving service, esp on the DCI staff. For those who have availed of this service, I was wondering how deep the engraving is, e.g .can you feel the texture? One of the things I like about the aluminum finish of my laptop is the silken feel of the surface; somehow, I am tempted to have some part of the cover engraved, like to personalize it for I.D. I'm surprised that the battery can take the laser engraving, too. The location (LRI Design Plaza) is where Ricco–Renzo Galleries is, across Alliance Francaise, so it can't be missed. It has a cafe at the G/F (quite pricey, but can provide a nice hang out while waiting for the etching to be done). TIA
Present... I'll have mine etched within the week. Something simple lang first before we try the more intricate designs. I'll post pics Good thing their office is near my house lang.
Kaffee, the laser etching vaporizes a very thin layer which is hardly noticeable and maintains the smoothness of the surface. Re: battery, the DCI guys thought it will be dangerous but hey, I got 3 pBook batteries etched yesterday without any explosion. My guess is that this is probably due to the very thin layer that the laser scratches (vaporizes) to create the marks that hardly heats the main body of the battery. Anyway, exercise caution. DCI might be open only til Wed, in observance of the Holy Week. Better call them to set appointment. Chris, the DCI guy, is usually in the office/shop after lunch. Hope this helps. Have a meaningful Lenten Season everybody!
Wow! Very nice laser etching... Okay, now I'm confused. Since my baby's turning one next month, applecare or laser etching? Haha!
Chanchan, try to inquire at Apple if laser etching macs still under warranty or applecare will truly void the warranty. I was brave enough to have my pBooks etched because they're both out of warranty already. I guess Skinhead has a point saying that laser etching should not in anyway void the warranty (well, not unless your mac needs upper case or lcd replacement). But we wouldn't know the real score on this unless we know from Apple. Laser etching or Applecare? Perhaps you can have both. Have a nice day!
