http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2007-04/27/content_6033983.htm (Just one of the many links to the same piece of news, which you guys are bound to have read already.) I forget his name, but one of the bigwigs stepping down from Microsoft's Xbox team was largely an admission that the Xbox wasn't winning the console war against PS2. Could it be the same for the PS3?
Its too early to say who is winning the consoles wars at the moment. Wait until Xmas where all 3 will be widely available with a years worth library of games to find out. That's usually a good indicator.
This is really big news. The Sony PlayStation, as many of you know, revolutionized the gaming industry, and Kutaragi is its chief architect. But he too is responsible for the PS3's delays and steep price. If heads have to roll, his goes first.
Well, I wasn't really saying the PS3 is going to lose this console war. Of course it's too early to say that. What I was getting at, though, is that this seems to be Sony's admission that they screwed it up enough for them to lose it. I don't get booblanco's post though. Who's gung-ho about the old Xbox and PS2?
March US sales figures show that Nintendo Wii and Sony's OLD PS2 are leading the game console race. For handhelds, Nintendo's DS sold almost three times the volume of Sony's PSP. Virtually the same trend in Japan, the gaming world's biggest market. http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2007/04/20/tech-npdusconsolevideogames-20070420.html?ref=rss
On the first post, it said that an executive stepped down at MS because of the PS2's success over the Xbox. It's curious considering the PS3 and Xbox360 have been out for quite a while now.
Both PS3 and Xbox 360 in their measurebation (my chip is faster than yours! my GPU makes more polygons! etc.) battle were blindsided by the Nintendo Wii. The Wii focussed on game quality and a novel (and fun) concept: The use of "body english" to play games. It also relies on less powerful, and less expensive chips reviving a long-forgotten business strategy of making money on each console. Both Sony and Microsoft lose money on each console they sell, hoping to profit from licensing and development fees.
It's a shame really that Sony and Microsoft had to rely on "muscle" to sell their latest consoles: cell processors, Blu-Ray, polygon-count, instead of banking on good research about what gamers really want - enjoyment! It's like we're back to the age of the muscle cars of Detroit when cubic inches were all that mattered. The production factories dictated what customers can buy, until the Japanese companies started to offer better options for the consumer. Now it's Sony who's repeating those same mistakes. Such a pity because Sony had winners with the PS2 and the PSP and they couldn't leverage that learning with their 3rd-gen console, same with Microsoft.
well... like all gamers know... it's not about the hardware. it's about the games! lots of exclusive to ps and ps2 games like famous RPGs done by square and enix have provided dominance for the ps2. once final fantasy and the other exclusive games for the ps3 comes along, then we'll know who is exactly dominating the console wars. kutaragi anyway is an adviser. normally in japan, if you're a "disgrace" at work, they rilly cut you off. this means he's still respected within sony. besides, we're all mac users here, right? should we rilly like anything that microsoft creates? and actually trust their xbox when everything they build gets broken after a year?
In fairness to MS, they really have something going with the million-strong Xbox Live, the largest console gaming community in the world. It's still the one to beat. There's also the upcoming surefire hit Halo 3 and the venerable game of the year GoW which some say is arguably the best game of any genre on any platform ever. The Xbox is no slouch when it comes to games, make no doubt about it. While the Wii created a huge niche for itself because of superb gameplay, there are still many gamers who enjoy eye candy and smooth framerates like me and it's got nothing to do with measurebation. As a gamer, I couldn't care less if the 360 sold well or not as long as there are great games out there that I want to play - and there are. It's a huge gaming community and there's something for everyone to like, whether it's on a 360, PS3 or Wii. In my case, the 360 does it for me. Choose yours. But I'm still crossing my fingers that the notorious 3RL doesn't happen to me.
Actually, according to Nintendo, they didn't rely on the gamers views. Instead of going the normal route by asking "real" gamers what they wanted in a next-gen console, they went the unconventional route by asking non-gamers what kind of console they would enjoy playing. That's how the came up with the concept of Wii.
I agreee with Boo, since im a power gamer, i consider the Wii as a novelty. Don't want to play a non-HD game on my set, that's why I settle for X360. Actually im a big fan of PS3 before but the lack of games and almost identical graphics to the 360 amde me decide that its not for me, not to mention lots of great games are going to be multi platform like GTAIV and DMC4. But the one thing that made me choose X360 is - of course the game of the year and an Xbox exclusive - Gears of War.
starting to sound like a fanboy there i agree as well as disagree with you in some points... agree because for most gamers, its not about the hardware,as long as you've got good games and all of them working smoothly, id play with it for hours until id finish the game (and maybe give it another round on a different level) disagree because although majority (if not all since there are a few non-mac users in the forum) of us maybe mac users,it does not mean that we hate M$ so much and not use their products. i for one use my old pc for synchronizing my contacts, calendars and files from my nokia phone since mac does not support PC suite( although i hope that nokia would come up with a mac version of thier pc suite ). I do have alot of synchronizing, updating and modifying to do almost every week on my phone and on my pc.also i find it a great help to have MS office on my mac,my wife uses my mac now instead of our pc and is becoming to like the mac more and more each day(and hopefully would be a convert as well so that i can persuade her to buy a MB or MBP ) for me, id choose a console that would not only give more games alone but give QUALITY games for my whole family.
My wife could never understand how my son and I can spend hours playing games on the PS2. But when we got the Wii, she's started to spend time playing with us . Initially with Wii Sports but right now, she's into Super Monkeyball!
true that... the xbox 360 has a good online gaming community and prolly the best shooter games. just so happens that my favorite RPGs are on the PS2 and will be on the PS3. i am a fangirl. ^_^ a sony fangirl, that is and i will admit that... mostly because xbox 360 doesn't give me the games i want. oh... and i must admit, i don't like it when microsoft doesn't innovate and simply copies everything (xbox = ps, ipod = zune)... ... and now that's settled... ^_^ the next-gen console wars are still in its infancy. when the big exclusive games come out, then that's how we'll know for sure. i do notice tho that male gamers are open to all kinds of consoles because they look at both hardware and software. my friends who are girls who play... just typically look at the games.
he was made like chairman emeritus.... like a consultant. bushido is still alive in corporate japan. if he were really disgraced, he'd either create his own company (like what other creators in square did), or completely be noted as "replaced."
