    ok, here's what happened.
iTunes woulnd't start. it started bouncing when you click the icon on the dock..then nothing. there's not even a traingle at the bottom of the icon that shows it's running.
I used spotlight to search for "itunes" and basically deleted everything that had itunes. Downloaded the new itunes and installed it.
    Same thing happened.
    still won't start.

anyone know what i can do?

Try launching iTunes from another account (preferably one that's not usually used). If you need to create another account, you can create one by going to System Preferences -> Accounts, click on the "+" at the bottom of the users list.

Also, have you tried running Applejack?

ok, applejack didn't seem to work.
making a new user let me run itunes...
    so what does that mean?
Does that mean i can't use my original profile anymore?

It just means that there's nothing wrong with the iTunes app itself. Could be a corrupted preference file. Go back to your regular account, go to your home -> Library -> Preferences folder, and delete (or move to your Desktop) the 3 iTunes preference files (com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist, com.apple.iTunes.plist, com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist). This will return iTunes to it's default configuration. See if it works.

tried that...didn't find any com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist....but i deleted the other two.
    nothing.
icon bounces....then stops..and the triangle disappears.
if i check activity monitor...ituneshelper is running...

Try to quit all your other apps, make sure that nothing else is running. Might be a conflict with another app.

Yehey! :) I've heard of several incidents where Shapeshifter interfered with other apps.

patrick, you wrote this very helpful message in year 2007, and it helped me in year 2009 fix my itunes 9 corrupt library problem. philmug's database of helpful hints has grown through the years, and the use of its search function really helps. thanks for this tip, patrick!

I had a hard time just a few mins ago as well. I just waited for a few mins until it finally mounted. I think it had something to do with the fact that the pop up informing me of a software update for my ipod touch was available was screwing up itunes' attempt to find & connect to my music library.
