Does the iTunes Store charge sales tax now? I currently have $30.33 in my account (I use gift certificates and music cards, by the way. no credit card.) and I was purchasing an album worth $29.97 and I always get an error message saying I have insufficient store credit remaining. I logged-out then logged-into my account and that hasn't resolved the problem. I then turned on the Shopping Cart, same thing. Then I saw the total on the bottom and it says "$29.97 plus applicable sales tax." Could that be the culprit in the insufficient credit message? I checked all my prior purchases and I was never charged a sales tax. Is this just implemented? If so, did Apple announce it at all? [I tried to attach a screenshot (jpg format) of the total but I get a "File upload failed" message. ]
That's odd...never had that problem. Just curious, where is your Post Code that you used in your iTunes account? I remember reading a TUAW article before, that if you had a New Jersey post code entered into your iTunes account then you will get charged sales tax for your iTunes purchase. It's some new taxation law they put into place. Not sure though if this is the case though.
Yup, I'm using a NJ address. Ugh... If you find the link to the TUAW article, kindly post here. Thanks for the reply.
Here you go: http://www.tuaw.com/2006/10/02/new-jersey-begins-taxing-its-downloads-like-cds-and-armored-cars/
Thanks again. I tried to download a cheaper album earlier and checked my purchase history, and yes, I pay tax now everytime I donwload. Grrr....
this is going to be a problem if you are going to purchase something that has to be shipped tho... maybe you can change it again? but i'm not sure... connecticut doesnt have taxes fyi i think
So far, it's only NJ that charges tax for iTS purchases. I tried to change my address but the store won't allow me unless I consume my credit (meaning I bring my balance down to $0.00). That was rather hard to do before without the tax and almost impossible to do now.
